Very good point. I hadn't thought of that but I spent a bit of time rewatching the end of 1.03 and Sherlock's clearly emotional reaction to John being in danger.
Oh yes, and the exchange there being one of the few times (in fact I think it's one of two times) where you do see him do a full-on teeth-showing smile.
Not to mention the horror on his face when he thinks John is Moriarty. As the blog said, he looked like a lost child.
