Papa Lex

Since I can't seem to post any comments in LJ, I loved teenage Nicky, [Bad username or site: dammitcarl text= @ livejournal.com]. I love the relationship between Lex and Nicky. Too often, I can't help thinking that Luthors are bound to be terrible fathers. Admittedly, they probably produce extremely successful sons, but also manage to hurt them, and make them hate their fathers in the process. As emotional as Lex can be, he is also highly critical and demanding, at least of himself, so I think that in his own way, Lex could be just as damaging to his children as Lionel has been.

I don't think it would happen while they were tiny children, but I have a deep down distrust of Lex and teenaged children. (Um... as in, I think that having Lex as a parent could become horrifying as the kid became a teenager, and Lex stated to put adult expectations on them. Not as in I don't trust him around teenagers. Clark doesn't look fifteen, regardless of his birth certificate... and Krytonians may mature faster. *g*) I can easily see Lex being very demanding of his young heirs, regardless of how much he disliked Lionel treating him that way.

So, thanks Jess, for giving us a great example of Lex as a good father. Lex isn't too emotionally demonstative, but he isn't distant from Nicky, and it's obvious that he loves Nicky completely. *sigh* I love fics that make me think better of the characters...

thanks. reading others' thoughts on these characters that are embarrassingly real to me is fascinating, and just a little bizarre.

clark as a father is far too easy to write. he's the good one, the cuddly one, but most of all, the one with the example.

lex as a father is so much harder. it's my story and i want him to be good. but he's still lex, not my original character. he has his ways, a luthor tempered with too many years with clark and a son, whose lives he fears for daily and who he loves more than lionel ever taught him how.

the reason i cringe during stories with lex's declarations of undying love is the same reason my lex is written the way he is. he doesn't say it a whole lot, but you never doubt he loves.
