C: Do you think if Stevens tripped into the pool next time, he'd get automatic qualification? D: *sniggers* It's worth a shot.
Hee! Okay - sending the link for this to a friend of mine who is completely into Sports Night, but surprisingly, not on LJ...
As for Cathy Freeman - the one flag/two flags/Tunstall-is-a-git-but-we-all-knew-that-anyway happened at the Aukland Commonwealth Games. Sydney 2000 was more "the entire country holds its breath for one minute and 48 seconds while she runs around the track". 2000, of course, was the big year for Reconciliation issues - the Sydney Bridge Walk in May, and then Sir William Deane apologised at the Opening Ceremony, and (I think) that was before Midnight Oil wore their "I'm Sorry" shirts, because I think that was at the closing. By the time it got to the 400m, Freeman's main rival (Marie-Jose something-or-other: Perez, maybe?) had pulled out, and the media were hyping the race to high heaven. Given the political issues, Freeman's win made the front page of the New York Times the next day, so it absolutely would have made it to Sports Night.
Eddie the Eel would probably have made it, and then there would have been big wins for the Americans: Marion Jones, Michael Johnson... and the women's gymnastics was a big thing. I'll have to check details, but they won gold in the teams event for the first time in years, because their last vaulter stuck her vault despite a major injury. If you want any more, I can definitely keep thinking. Olympics are a big thing for me.
