Yuletide Recs...

Firstly, the ones that made me laugh:

Penguins Do It, Too
The OC, Ryan/Seth. A lovely fluffy future-fic that you have to love for Seth's ranting replies.
"Well, yes, Ryan and I have been together for a long time, but we're Mormon, you see. We believe that Christ bonded us together for a reason. Let no man tear asunder what the Lord has put together," he'd say, and make the sign of the cross. That had gone over well on their cross-country road trip last summer. Ryan could still see a little scar where he'd hit his knee trying to get away from a rather large gentleman in Utah who'd overheard Seth saying it to a waitress at a pancake house.

Pub Crawl
Keen Eddie, Monty/Eddie. Lovely characterisation and just as funny as the show. I love Monty in this. And Eddie. And Carol. And Nathaniel. It's the type of short banter fic that I adore. Plus, there's macking making out.

The Lives of the Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking
If that title doesn't tell you what fandom it's in, you need to go see Zoolander. Hansel/Derek. Wonderful Derek-pov: he's just as charming, easily confused and ridiculously good looking as he is in the film. It's a very funny fic but I now have the word eugoogoliser stuck in my head.
"Look, I don't think this is the appropriate time to be fighting," he gritted his teeth. "Not after I've just given the eugoogalee of my best friends. It's unrespectworthy to Rufus, Brint and Meekus, okay?" He glanced around the room quickly, looking for Maury. Maury could get him out of this. But he couldn't find him anywhere in the crowded room.

"You mean eulogy?" Hansel laughed and took a sip of his own drink.

Derek shook his head angrily. "No, you dimwit. Eugoogalee. Gawd." Hansel was really an idiot.

This Way To The Egress
Discworld fic featuring the Nac Mac Feegles (complete with their Scottish dialect). It's one of those fics that just slips right into the book it relates to (A Hat Full of Sky) and really captures that Pratchett-ish feel. Plus, it features Death. You've got to love a fic that features Death.

Now, for the more serious recs:

And o'er his heart a shadow
El Dorado. A nice fic that deals with Miguel and Tulio going back to El Dorado and finding that they miss their old life. Short, touching and bittersweet. Wonderfully vivid characterisation.
"'m happy." Miguel smiles, like he's demonstrating. But Tulio can see through his smile. He can. See right through it to the other side where's it's not a smile, it's a frown, and it's *sad.* To prove it he reaches out and pulls Miguel's mouth down until he looks like a street clown, the ones with the painted faces and patchwork rags of clothes.

The Good That Won't Come Out
Sex and the City, Samantha fic. Bittersweet and aching, and a lot more insightful than I expected a Sex and the City fic to be. It's a great coda to the end of the series, all about how people change and leave you behind. It's a Samantha who's still tough, still gutsy, and still dealing with the how the world is, instead of dreaming about how it should be.
And it's not that she doesn't like Miranda, though there have been times when that was true. Times when Miranda used to join them late from the office, all sharp angles and short spiked hair, and Samantha had thought: What are you trying to prove? No, Miranda was vital back then. Clear-headed with a dirty laugh. Someone to roll her eyes at when Charlotte or Carrie were wrapped in some fairytale romance.

It's just, without the other two, they don't really work.

But the Seamen Were Not Gentlemen
Hornblower fic. It's a lovely flashback to the start of Horatio's time on the Indy and a great way to remember his mix of eagerness, uncertainty and determination. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good Pellow-pov and this has it perfectly. I'd love to quote something -- it's full of rich visuals and really captures the feel of the series -- but I really loved it all.

An Unnatural Condition
Another Hornblower fic. There can never be enough fic about the mutiny trial. Never. This is Pellow-pov and also features a spot-on Black Charlie Hammond (you have no idea how much I love watching the senior officers bitch at each other with their constant "sirs"). It's a lovely piece that fleshes out the history between Pellew and Hammond, and hints at the relationship between Horatio and Archie, all while keeping Pellew the same thoughtful, faithful and good man that he is. I loved it muchly.
