(no subject)

Got into work just before 9am. (I technically work 9-6pm, but I could have been here at 8.30am and left at 5.30pm, if not for the incredible appeal of Rob Lowe. *g*)

Worked hard, until the boss left at 9.40am. Am now reading through the friends list.

I'm sending a virtual bitchslap to [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples for upsetting fandom (and for upsetting [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer and [livejournal.com profile] jessindistress in particular).

Wendi's having One of Those Days, which just sucks, too. I think it's a worldwide balancing thing. Worldwide, Monday has a quota of misery that it has to inflict. Since Australia got Monday as a public holiday, I think the rest of the world is feeling it a bit more keenly.

Edited, because my grammar sucks. No wonder other people have no idea what I'm talking about...

OK... I have to ask. If the fandom_scruples thing is a big troll, then the worst I've done is feed the troll, despite my good intentions. Why is it that I'm getting the same bitchsmack as the troll itself, if that's the case?

Or am I missing something?

Argh! *re-reads over post*

I'm sending a virtual bitchslap to fandom_scruples for upsetting fandom, and elke_tanzer and jessindistress in particular. You *suck*.

Nope, my grammar sucks.

Sorry, babe! Totally sorry. You see, I know I meant "I'm sending a virtual bitchslap to fandom_scruples (for upsetting fandom, and elke_tanzer and jessindistress in particular). You *suck*."

The way I wrote it, wasn't the way I meant it. I'm not peeved at you at all. I am, however, highly irritated at FS for upsetting you.

Does that make more sense?

Oh! OK. I just figured that with all of my crusadey alarms, someone has to have decided that I'm the reincarnation of Chicken Little. I've kind of been waiting for it, actually, because especially when I'm a bit cold-medicated, I really do go very Ranty McRantypants at times.

{{{hugs}}}

So I guess I'm not Chicken Little this time? And that all of my concerns and advice and stuff are kind of OK?

Well, yeah. The threat has turned out to be a stupid hoax, but your post got people replying and pointing out the accurate information. That alone is a good thing.

If you over-reacted a little...? Well, it's a really nasty, petty thing to threaten fandom with, so I totally empathise. I mean, I read your post after all of the info had been added, and knew quickly that it was just trolling. All the same, it made me totally see red for a couple of minutes.

It's presumptious, it's rude, it's vicious and it's cruel. It's abusing the trust that people have in fandom. It's the type of thing that could have *real* consequences for people. We've all heard the urban rumours of fen who've been found out by bosses and had to quit over it. And when it comes to family, it's your personal right to tell them, *if* you want to. Another person has no right to spread this personal information around. It's cowardly and nasty, and the type of thing that makes you stop and question human nature. And that's not even taking into account the *legal* ramifications, if they'd been right about the COPA.

It's a *horrible* thing to threaten, even just for trolling purposes.

*takes a deep breath*

But, in all likelihood, the person's just doing it for attention. They don't actually have a legal leg to stand on, and it's highly unlikely that they will actually go through with the threat.

But still... it's incredibly infuriating, because you suddenly feel helpless. There isn't a lot you can do about this person, other than spread the warning. You can't track them down; you can't actually stop them from carrying out threats; hell, you can't even ostracise them from fandom, because they can just assume another screen-name. It *sucks*.

Yeah, the only real defense to this sort of nasty underhanded thing is to just make fandom as a whole more robust... like backing up artistic creations to multiple, secure locations, and making sure a support and communications network which doesn't have any single points of failure is in place for when someone really does get in legal trouble or tossed out of their house or job.

You know, all that survivalist Y2K stuff must have stuck in my brain. LOL!

I believe that not all of the urban legends of fen getting fired are false. There are at least a few stories that are true, and the people involved don't want to step forward and then get burned again. I believe at least one of them is on my friendslist.

*nods* I agree. But, I haven't known any of the people personally, although I do trust the people who told me about it. So, I think it happened, I just don't know particulars well enough to state it as fact.
