Lunchtime thoughts
May. 19th, 2003 01:14 pmThe bosses who wanted to be out of the office by 12 noon today? Still here and showing no signs of being gone before 5.30pm. *rolls eyes*
Still, on fannish news, this is why I love Te's Wes/Gunn fics, and the characters when she writes them.
Other fannish thoughts: I know that some people download eps of SV and BtVS. Theoretically, how could I download them at work and burn them to CD? What would be the problems involved? And, since most of the CD-RW's seem to be 80 minutes long, does that mean I can only download one ep of SV per CD?
I have no clue where you guys even download them from, let alone how to use a CD-burner, but since work has a great 'net connection and a CD-burner, it's pretty lazy of me not to take this opportunity to increase my technical knowledge. *g*
And in random lunch related thoughts the Potato and Leek instant soup? Still tastes great. Really strong flavour of potatoes. This greatly pleases me.

Date: 2003-05-18 08:32 pm (UTC)This does not have much to do with the rain in Spain or number of episode files you can record per CD.
What you should be looking at is the MB size, which ought to be 700MB. VCD quality episodes are around 450MB, which you can only record one of per disc, but the source I dl'd Smallville and Witchblade from gave 130MB files, so I could put 4 or 5 of them to a disc.

Date: 2003-05-18 08:46 pm (UTC)I figured since you mentioned that you had 4 disc of Utena, that it couldn't be as basic as the number of minutes. That just wouldn't work.

Yeah, they were all 650 or 700MB discs. So, next question is, where do you download these eps from?
Sorry to sound like such a dork. It's just a case of I've never paid attention to it since it always seemed like another technical type thingy that would be beyond my dl'ding abilities.
Since SV's been pretty much cancelled, I'm curious as to how I can watch the rest of the season. Plus, it would be interesting to see the eps without the ridiculous amount of editing that we get over here.
Re:
Date: 2003-05-18 08:55 pm (UTC)My source was a private distributer--I don't even think she's giving them out anymore. I'd say, just look around on Kazaa.

Wait. What?

Date: 2003-05-18 09:22 pm (UTC)By the way, have you checked what your work's policy on all this downloading is? Odds are, they monitor internet usage at least somewhat, and this could get you in trouble. Just something to keep in mind.

Date: 2003-05-18 10:23 pm (UTC)I've been ranting about it on LJ for a bit, and forgot to put in that teeny, tiny disclaimer of: I mean it's not being screened in Aust, not it's being canned in the USA.
Work just got a bit too hectic to reply quickly.

Date: 2003-05-19 05:27 am (UTC)2. I use Kazaa which, like Imesh is a peer to peer sharing program. Most corporate networks will either have them blocked or be very upset at you using them as you are sharing your files in order to access other (even if it's only the directories you nominate). Kazaa has been spreading some viruses recently too.
3. www.buffy.nu Good place to get the last Buffy stuff including eps.
4. It's entirely possibly to download an 80 mb episode on a normal 56.6kps connection. I don't have broadband or cable modem, I just leave the computer running overnight. Guess it depends how you pay for your internet access.

Date: 2003-05-19 04:32 pm (UTC)2. - Youch on the security thing. If I ended up downloading a virus, they would have my guts for garters, no doubt about it. Plus, not a good idea to share our files, just in case. I'm not technically minded enough to be sure that people can't access confidential info, and considering that we have things like people's Tax File Numbers on file, that's a very bad thing.
3. Thanks for the site. I'll check it out. *g*
4. My internet access tends to cut me off after four hours. It's fine if I'm awake, I can just reconnect, but my computer seems to have trouble automatically reconnecting itself.
Plus, the computer's in my bedroom and the noise makes it a little hard to sleep. Hmmm... but I'm thinking about it. If I could get the computer to reconnect automatically, I could just move it out of my room. That's going to take a bit of stuffing around...

Date: 2003-05-19 04:43 pm (UTC)After listening to the advice of you guys, I think it's best not to try downloading at work. And, I'd like to be able to actually keep the episodes somewhere other than the hard-drive (purely selfish reasons - it's mum's computer and just because she's lent it to me for the moment, doesn't mean she won't want it back eventually), and I don't have a CD burner.
You mentioned that you'd eventually have all of S2. Would I be able to get you to make me a copy of it then? *puppy dog eyes*
