Rules:

Those who wish to participate will say so, and I will give them three topics, or spheres of interests, which I think they are not interested in, or maybe I would be even surprised to learn that they have an affinity with. It would be curious to learn who will be more surprised, those who hear what people think they are not interested in or cannot do, or those who learn that their expectations of people are either incorrect or spot on.

[personal profile] runpunkrun gave me:

envelope

I so rarely send letters these days and when I do, it's nearly always work related and boring envelopes, but I do love those fancy coloured ones that come in letter writing sets.

Through many moves and decluttering, I've thrown away all of my writing sets but I still have a love for those little coordinating note pads and envelopes, all in pretty colours and motifs. I don't use them -- hence the culling -- but I love them like other people love craft supplies.

bamboo

One of the coolest things that I remember about visiting Hong Kong was the way bamboo was used as scaffolding for various big construction projects. Here, scaffolding is always, always made of metal but that was a weirdly cool difference.

As a plant, I like bamboo as a screening option -- I'd actually like to use it down the side of our house to screen the kitchen window -- but I don't trust it not to spread like a noxious weed.

As a potplant, I once accidentally left a potted bamboo in a cupboard for months. (It had been put down while unpacking after a move and forgotten.) I think I might be the only person who's actually managed to kill bamboo.

bicycle

I had a bike as a kid, but I honestly don't think I've been on one since I was 17-ish. (We moved interstate and had to cull. I wasn't a huge fan of bikes in general and suddenly we were living in a much bigger city, so I don't think we replaced them. Hm.) I do have a very clear memory of riding my bike down suburban streets when I was around 7 and enjoying the sense of movement and rush of wind.

In hindsight, the numbering should have gone the other way -- 1 the latest, 287 the oldest -- since that's how AO3 lists/counts them and would have made it easier.

[personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi - 50
I'm Somebody's Fetish - 311 words of a gen Sports Night drabble. Man, that's hardly a story. (Clearly, I pad my writing stats a little. Heh.) Okay, things I like:

1) While I have lost the link to the original comic strip this was about, I still like the general idea -- that Dan is cool enough to reference things that Casey doesn't get, but Dan will still find a way to include Casey on the joke.

2) I like the rhythm of the very first paragraph, the humour and ... Casey-ness of it:
[Casey] dressed casually. He dressed neatly. He wore neat, casual clothes and he was presentable.

3) I liked that I could mention Natalie and Dana and Jeremy (and that Casey is uncool, but so is Jeremy so there is some nerdy solidarity there).

[personal profile] jenna_thorn - 99
Days Like Years - 1625 words of Sam/Josh, West Wing.

1) This is a little experimental: first person POV, a very limited description, a lack of names at the start which makes it harder to follow, and the slightly unreal feeling of exhaustion. Parts of it work and parts of it are clumsy, but I really like that I tried something different. Even if it doesn't work together as a story as well as it could do, I'm proud of myself for trying.

And by halfway through, the story does pick up momentum, so I like that. (And, you know, this was written in 2005. So maybe it's nice to see how my writing has improved since then.)

2) I like this bit of description:
"Oh," I say, taking a good look at Sam. His clothes are rumpled and creased; his hair's unruly and sticking out over the edge of his collar; his very blue eyes are also bloodshot. He looks about half as tired as I feel. "It's been a long day."

3) I like the simplicity of this gesture:
Sam doesn't smile. He lays a hand on my forearm, running his thumb over the rolled-up sleeve of my shirt.

[personal profile] misbegotten - 107
In Shades of Indigo and Violet - SGA, John/Rodney, Wing porn.

1) This is the only wingporn fic I've ever written, but I still think it's hot. Go me. I also like that it's sex that follows the idea of "doing what feels good to get off", a little messy and not quite perfect, but hot.

2) "You're surprisingly mean for an overgrown butterfly." Hee!

3) Overall, I find this story very funny. There's Zelenka being snarky ("offend gravity and common sense at the same time"), there's references to pranks-as-retaliation, there's lots of snark between John and Rodney. I really like that sense of humour.

[personal profile] anarfea - 201

The Ill-Advised Backpack - Prison Break AU, Michael/Alex

1) Written for Celli's 2009 taxfic challenge, and therefore a wonderful excuse to talk about the exciting ideas of depreciation as a financial concept vs the real world usage of an asset. (Yes, I am an accountant. And a little bit of a nerd.)

2) I love the pacing of this, the short sharp sections leading to more. The way it's not strictly chronological but it fits together by the end, and how half of the focus is on how a story is told and remembered. It's not just about what happens, it's how you interpret that and assign meaning.

3) As much as I love a happy ending, and the sheer temptation that a super smart Michael would be to teacher-Alex, I also love Alex and Felicia's friendship. I love that she calls him out but also respects his boundaries (I love the "Don't" moment, where Alex doesn't need to actually explain that it's a sore spot). I love the shared history and shared sense of humour, too.

Halfway through the junior pile, he gets a call from Felicia, saying, "Of the many, many themes present in Moby Dick, bestiality is not one of them."

It surprises a laugh out of Alex. "A man's love for his whale? There's got to be a market for that somewhere."

(It was nice to end this meme with a story I'm really, really fond of.)
out_there: Picture of a orange-red tree (: Autumn tree)
I kind of fell into silence last week, but not on purpose. I meant to update and then work was busy and then it was a long weekend (where I enjoyed being offline so much), and then suddenly it's a week later. *waves hands vaguely*

But, since this meme is going around and it looks like fun:

I currently have 287 works posted on AO3. Choose a random number -- no peeking! -- between 1 and 287 inclusive (where 1 is the first work ever posted and 287 is the latest), and I will tell you three things I currently like about that work.

(Okay, to be honest, there are a few translations of fics that pad out that number, but if you randomly hit a translation, I'll talk about the original story.)

out_there: I *heart* El! (WC: El by btfl_decadence)
Because I'm bored and scattered, and I know I'll be flying out in 48 hours, let's try starting a photo meme.

The theme is "sights we take for granted". I'd like you to post three pictures:

a) your hand
b) your keys
c) a sight you see every day

Photos )

In my case, I took a shot of the houses across the street from my place (complete with this morning's cold foggy weather). What do you see every day?

Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I’ve written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what’s going on in the character’s heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Tell me about a story I haven't written, and I'll give you several sentences from that story.
