Remember how I said I was going to post this in January? Well, it's now the 1st of March. (But last year was the 29th of April, so it could be worse.)

Cupid Is Not His Preferred Name - Glee, Kurt/Blaine, AU, 9670 words.

When Blaine joined the acolytes of Aphrodite, there was respect for the art of matchmaking. Admittedly, that was a long time ago. These days, helping people recognise true love is a lot harder. (AU, set early s2. No spoilers.)

Thoughts:

I make no promises about actually getting something posted for Nov and Dec. Given how the weeks are flying by, I really can't commit to anything. But it's nice to have had a productive writing year.

Thoughts:

It's funny, but this was a silly idea that stuck with me and while I had so much fun writing it, I don't like it as a story as much as "Types, re: Breaking Them". That story felt like it was the minimum words used to tell that story (in that there was more in that universe/possible, more to imagine) and it felt like there was a much bigger lives that could be imagined. Whereas "One on One" was a few fun scenes that might have been a c-plot on an episode -- fun to spend time with Blaine and see Kurt through his besotted gaze, but very self-contained.

I'm having troubles getting the cupid wip to work and I think I might have to abandon it and try something new. (I have notes on a H50 idea so that might be next.) Given how little I've written so far this month, it might be a struggle to get something posted in September.

Yay for this year's wordcount. It's so nice to feel productive again.

Also yay for writing that story. I tried to write it within a reasonable wordcount (let's be honest, I start a story and seem incapable of writing below 20K words. That might be fun to read, but only if the plot really requires them. Otherwise, you might need an editor to pull it all back to shape) and I'm happy with the end result. I knew the format I wanted (present, past, switching POVs and timelines) but I had to write each section seperately and then piece them back together for the final product. But I had fun and I still like everything that was said in it.

(And, okay, everything I said in reply to comments. I swear, I was so involved in that story that I think I answered the first dozen comments with paragraphs of comments on Blaine, Kurt and/or Sebastian. If you asked a question now, I'd still rave for paragraphs about it.)

I'm mostly through another Glee story, an extremely light-hearted Hall and Oates thing that has... no conflict and no real point, but sometimes, you just want to write fluff about your OTP.

The cupid wip is still in progress but I haven't worked on it in a while.

The PB and Inception stories... I haven't done anything on. Maybe get the next Glee one done and then try to focus on those for the end of year? Plus, I promised people stories in like, January, but I haven't written them. I haven't forgotten, I just got... blinded by the adorableness of Kurt/Blaine.

Shopping Thoughts:

This isn't part of the monthly tally thing, but given it's my birthday in two weeks, I'm considering treating myself. I'm tossing up between two indulgences.

The first is this pair of nude Mary Janes heels, that I've had my eye on for a while and are now on special. I love the scalloped edges and the slightly chunky heel. On the other hand, I have thick ankles so the straps might not be flattering and I'm not entirely sure what I'd wear them with. My work clothes are all grey and black. But, yes, pretty. I like them.

The second is the Wii Glee Karaoke Revolution Volume 3 which I saw in K-Mart tonight. I like the selection of s2 songs (even if there's a noticeable lack of Warblers) but buying a game for my birthday feels a little silly. Plus, I don't play the Wii anywhere near as much as I thought I would when I got two years ago so there's a good chance I wouldn't play it much.

Sometimes, the thought of shopping is almost as fun as the shopping itself.

Thoughts:

\o/ !!!

Look at that wordcount, baby! Plus, it's a longer story that I'm so happy to have written, that I feel proud of (even if there was a point here or there that I should have researched more, even if Kurt-gets-a-Broadway-part could have been it's own story, even if I've read responses that were disappointed in the lack of epilogue, even if I've thought so much about these versions of the characters that I could tell you about their first Christmas together and apart, and how they get married, and how adorable their kid will be). I'm filled with fondness for this story.

I get like that with AUs. I'm still fond of my SGA Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and my PB Impossible Things. There's something about AUs that give you the freedom to really claim the characters and fall in love with their world.

In terms of wips, I've done no work on the Inception or the PB one. I have started the Glee Magazine AU (I expect it to be posted by next month's update) and I've started a cupid-AU (I... don't think that one will be long, until I try to imagine writing it short and blank on the how. But I've started and I'm still fond of the idea, so that's something.)

Given that Channel Ten/Eleven are rescreening the S3 repeats of Glee so I'll get to see everything I missed earlier this year (read: nearly every episode after the hiatus), I wouldn't be surprised if I keep writing in Glee for a while longer.

... of course, having said that, I'm amused at how some of the same themes/character ideas pop up in the magazine AU and "Shining Upon the Waves". Possibly, I'll run out of things to say.

But, still. That wordcount. It feels like such a success.

Thoughts:

I'm posting this tally early because realistically, I'm not going to get the glee cruise wip posted this month. It will probably be June and it's 53K of words so that makes for an awesome annual tally, even if I didn't hit my post-something-every-month goal.

Because I've just sent something off to beta, of course I'm thinking of the next thing I want to write.

My current wips/ideas are:
- "Specificity is the Whatever of the Whatever" -- Inception, Arthur/Eames, taxfic. I want to write about Arthur first meeting Eames over taxes. (No, really. This is what I want to write. Arthur being a slightly dodgy professional "consultant" and Eames undercover as part of some forgery/fraud/thingy and pretending to be a tax agent -- he faked his references and qualifications, clearly -- and interviewing Arthur for his return. And then Arthur, because he's smart enough to maintain several fake IDs with actual governmental records, running into Eames again -- except under a different identity -- and Eames pretending to be a CPA but under another name, and... yes. I don't know where the plot will go from there but I have the set-up.)

- Prison Break, a story I started for a few people who requested it (including Isagel) that started like this: .... )

It feels like it should be the start to something, but I don't know what.

- Glee wip: Klaine AU set in a magazine publishers, starting with Sebastian/Blaine and hopefully ending with Kurt/Blaine. I have ideas. Thoughts. Things I want to say about Blaine and choices and settling. It's big and blurry, but interesting (to me) so I think that might be next.

- Glee wip: See, I had this idea for a "A Series of Firsts" set during the year apart for Kurt and Blaine. I had a scene written. I had ideas of skype dates and long distance serenades. I had unexpected visits plotted in my head. I also have an actual playlist devoted to this idea and how the first song Blaine would sing to Kurt would totally be "Hey There, Delilah," with Kurt Hummel replacing Delilah in the lyrics (it totally scans, I've sung it in the car). Except canon might not match well.

It wouldn't be the first detailed fic idea to never make it to words, but when I still hear new music and think of that playlist (at the moment, Ingrid Michaelson's Parachute feels like the Klainiest of Klaine songs to me), I'm undecided.

But, to sum up: nothing posted, will be something next month.

Last year's stats

Fannish works posted this year:

January:

These prompt responses weren't on last year's wordcount so they can go in here.

Sunday Tea - Sherlock, John/Sherlock, 450 words.

As far as John's concerned, afternoon tea should be a cuppa and a few biscuits, not finger sandwiches and croissants, colourful macaroons and poetically described tea choices. He wants a cuppa, not an 'indulgent experience for the senses' that costs over twenty quid each. But come hell or high water -- or in Sherlock's case, mysterious disappearances and puzzling murders -- Sunday afternoons mean afternoon tea.

Silence is Telling - Generation Kill, Brad/Nate, 411 words.

There are some things no self-respecting Marine would ever say aloud.

Flight - Prison Break, Michael/Alex, 591 words.

If Michael needs a few days, a few weeks, a few months to get lost, so be it. If Michael wants to spend hours behind the wheel, squinting into the sunlight, following country backroads without saying a word, Alex can live with that. If Michael wants to avoid people, avoid motels and camping grounds, wants to spend alternate nights shifting in the passenger seat or twisted awkwardly across the backseat, that's fine too. Alex will defend his right to go a little crazy. If any deserves a good mental breakdown, it's Michael Scofield.

February:

And the Pattern Breaks - Inception, Eames/Arthur, 1,000 words. Written for the challenge. Also on DW.

Arthur knows that within a week, Eames will show up on his door, no matter which city he chooses. Like Arthur knows Eames kicks the covers in his sleep and makes perfect boiled eggs, white cooked and yolk still runny. Like he knows this visit will last for a month, maybe two, before one of them answers a call and has to be somewhere else.

May:

The Art of Flat-Sharing - Sherlock, John/Sherlock, 5,708 words. Written for the challenge. Also on DW.

Everybody likes John Watson. He's down-to-earth and unassuming, and standing next to Sherlock, well... It's no wonder everyone assumes Sherlock's the horrific flatmate.

It's as irritating as any false assumption. Sherlock may be difficult at times, but John is hardly the flat-sharing ideal.

Conclusion:

5 stories, which is half as many as last year.

Breakdown by fandom:
2 Sherlock - 6,158 words
1 Generation Kill - 411 words
1 Prison Break - 591 words
1 Inception - 1000 words

Total words written: 8,160

Thoughts:

This has got to be my least productive writing year, at least in terms of actual finished fic posted. It was my last year of study and my first year of a new role, and I was busy. Especially last April where if you ignore the public holidays for last Easter (which I spent studying), the only days I wasn't at work for at least a few hours was the 3rd and the 30th. It was hellishly busy.

Mind you, I also stopped doing the monthly round-ups and I think that had an impact on my productivity.

I spent the second half of the year working on Sherlock wip (the working title was "Psychosomatic" but I think the actual title will be "Leave the Signs and Sirens"). It's not beta'd and posted so it's not going in 2011 -- it might need a lot of work, I'm really not sure -- but it's only 25k. That still wouldn't bring me anywhere near previous years' totals.

I also wrote a little Kurt/Blaine snippet but it's really part of a much longer story (it's going to be something like "A Series of Firsts" and show little scenes of Kurt and Blaine surviving the year apart when Kurt gets into NYADA and Blaine's stuck at McKinley. It'll probably be jossed by the first ep of S4, but this story's been floating in the back of my head for a while and deserves to be written down.)

Oh well. At least it won't be hard to beat this year's results.

ETA: Oh, I forgot that one of last year's goals was to upload everything to AO3. I did that. Every fic I've written is now there, all 230 of them.

ETA2: As [personal profile] celli pointed out, I passed the CPA this year. That's a pretty big acheivement.

Goals for 2012:

I have three different Glee fics (all Kurt/Blaine, two AUs and one futurefic) that I'd like to write. I want to write something for Inception (I have the title but not the plot) and I want to write an AU for Hawaii 50. I keep thinking back on that Heroes AU that I never finished (10k of words feels like a lot to assign to the deadwips pile) and I might write more Sherlock once I've seen the new episodes.

Basically, I'd like to get back to writing regularly. I miss it.

Audience Participate Time:

If you got to the end of this self-indulgent post, I'm opening up the floor. Any questions you want to ask about the 2011 stories? Or any questions in general? Feel free to ask.

Thoughts:

I opened up this page prepared to post an update of nothing posted for two months, and somehow forgot that I'd finally posted that PB story. It's an unexpectedly good start to today.

I think, mostly, I've been spoiled by [personal profile] oxoniensis as a beta. She's both courteous and ridiculously speedy with getting things back to me, and I'd completely forgotten how it feels to spend over a week stuck in writerly limbo, waiting for a story to get emailed back to you. (This is not me whining; this is more me taking a moment to be thankful for how good I usually have it.)

In other words, I'm waiting on the beta for the WC wip. I was hopeful about posting it in August but it won't kill me to wait until September.

My other goal -- the one of finishing all the old outstanding wips by the end of the year -- is getting closer. Now, it's just the one Heroes wip. I don't have ideas for it yet but I do have a semester of study looming and I can't procrastinate over that forever.

My last goal -- to update all of my stories on OA3 -- has completely stalled. I'll have to get back to that next time I'm online with nothing else to do. (Lately, I've been reading Inception and Sherlock fic, so the time hasn't been quite as empty as you'd think.)

Thoughts:

Why is it that the perfect story snippets -- description, dialogue, scene shifts -- always come when you're nowhere near a computer (say, in the shower or in bed with the lights off, debating whether to get up) and when you have a spare ten minutes with a keyboard and computer screen, your mind goes blank?

I have three current wips (which in and of itself is something of a victory for me):

Prison Break - "PB talking" wip. OT3 Alex/Michael/Sara (or, hmm, more Sara/Michael, mentions of Alex/Michael, Sara/Alex which might possibly lead to Sara/Michael/Alex but I can't be sure yet). Jason-verse. Current word count: 3,410.

Heroes - "Undercover AU" wip. Matt/Mohinder. Undercover FBI AU that's lingered way too long. Current word count: 11,747.

White Collar - "Mozzie POV" wip. Neal/Peter (with mentions of Neal/Peter/Elizabeth) from Mozzie's POV. Current word count: 6,497.

That's over 20,000 words sitting in wips, and I haven't posted a finished story since March 2010. And the thing is, I've sat down at times and known the next scene and the next conversation, but I seem to be avoiding the sitting down and typing part of it.

I mean, yeah, for June, writing wasn't viable. Once you factored in organising the travelling for July and getting work stuff done before I go, I haven't had the brainpower to sit and work at fannish stuff.

I suspect that my lack of writing discipline will lead to my days of fannish writing ending with a slow, drawn out whimper. But given how well most of my life is going, I can't really complain about the little sacrifices that allow the bigger things to happen.

So, in lieu of actual writing from me, how about a quick SPN rec: Freedom Hangs Like Heaven by [personal profile] aesc. Cas/Dean, 42,000, AU from 5.14. Awesome, awesome Cas characterisation (cranky, stubborn, serious but adorable Cas is something that should appear in all Cas/Dean fics) and the ending was perfect for me.
