out_thereQuick rec for Land of the Living. It was one of those fics where the characterisation (especially, the view of Sam) jarred me for a moment, made me stop and think. Actually, I can't deny that Sam could be that guy; I certainly can't argue against it using canon. It's just my personal feelings about Sam that say he isn't quite like this, but the author also shows examples of things that feel just like my Sam.
It's interesting reading those fics that make you think about your favourite characters and re-evaluate them. Although, this is also a very satisfying fic for other reasons. There's a strong... hmmm... Joshness to the first person POV, that shows itself in the plain language, the clear linear thoughts and the direct style of the piece. There's a detailed description of just how these two guys interact which is very believable - it's sex, politics and arguements; it's quirks, hang ups, and daily routines; it's driving each other crazy and quiet unspoken compromises.
It's different, both in format and in ideas. Highly enjoyable.
