out_there: B-Day Present '05 (Hurt meet Comfort)
If I was [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine, I'd be giving this rec a fancy title like "Best fanfic that shows that this is how second-person POV should be used" but I'm not her so I won't.

Due South by [livejournal.com profile] pheobesmum is a fic that grabs you from the first second and refuses to let go. It's second-person Casey POV, so close inside his skull that you can almost feel your head developing a rectangular shape. Pre-show, set back in the hazy days when Casey and Dan had only known each other for a year and Dan was probably breaking hearts all across campus.

I love the characterisation in this, I love the run-on sentences and the flowing rhythm of the words. I love the descriptions, bringing everything to life in sharp, vivid detail and making you *feel* so much.

...but when you look at Danny’s mouth, sometimes, there’s something about the curve of it, a wistfulness, a hunger, and those things strike a chord in you; they remind you of something, something you didn’t know you’d forgotten, something missing that you never knew your perfect life didn’t possess until you looked for it and found it wasn’t there. And, if you’re honest with yourself, over these past few nights, in those hot, sticky, skanky motel rooms, you’ve looked at Danny, lying on his bed, wearing only his boxers and a light sheen of sweat, and you’ve wanted, oh, how you’ve wanted, to reach over a hand and trace a bead of sweat with your finger, bring it to your tongue and taste it.

(The only possible complaint I could have is that the text size seems to be set rather small, but it's well worth the squinting.)
