TW Crushes

See, I was thinking about this post yesterday. Then I figured that while the thought was amusing me and getting me through the day, it probably wasn't worth posting. And then there was a story about [livejournal.com profile] celli falling into a guy's lap, and I decided fate was nudging me towards... well. Sharing my procrastination.

TW is based so much around attraction and sex that I can't help thinking of the characters in terms of that.

For instance, Jack is the incredibly hot guy you'd meet at a disco some night. He'd be charming and flirtatious (but not sleazy), and he'd catch your eye on the dancefloor. You'd end up dancing with him -- probably let him talk you into dirty dancing, even though you're kind of uncoordinated when it comes to dancing up close -- and have a fantastic night. But whether you said goodbye as you were both lined up for a cab or you took a random chance and invited him back to your place, he'd be the guy you'd never see again. You'd always think of him fondly as that really hot guy you met one night, even though you know you'll never meet another guy as drop-dead gorgeous as that.

Ianto would be the train-crush. You know, that cute guy in the well-pressed suit who sometimes catches the same train as you? Who sits opposite, smiling out the window or reading a book, not noticing that you even exist? He's that guy. He's the one that you watch -- when you should be reviewing for class or checking your diary for meetings -- and think dirty thoughts about. Occasionally, he'll catch you staring and smile, and you'll smile back as if you haven't spent the last five minutes imagining his tie wrapped around his wrists and tied to your headboard, but you'll never manage to strike up a conversation. (The closest you'll get is that morning you're running late and having a really bad hair day, and trip over your own feet rushing onto the train, and land face-down in his lap. He'll smile, ask if you're alright and help you up, and you'll be too embarrassed to watch him for the next week.)

Owen is a guy you meet at a friend's party. He's a mate of your friend's new boyfriend and he never shuts up, and at first you think he's obnoxious and a bit of a creep. Halfway through the night -- when you're fairly drunk and the party's simmered back to people sitting in big groups and talking -- you'll decide that he might be loud and rude, but he's also funny. You keep bumping into him because he keeps hanging at your friend's place, playing rounds of Wii with her boyfriend on her big TV. He's still really funny (mean, but funny) and kind of cute, and you find yourself playing Wii and thinking that if he asked you out for a drink, you'd say yes. Then you find out that he's sleeping with your friend (behind her boyfriend's back) so you decide he's a creep after all.

Tosh is the incredibly hot geekgirl that you start talking to and find you get on great. You talk for hours and invite her to your place for coffee, and she stays the night. And the night after that. Then work calls her in, and she's busy working on a new program, and you don't see her for a week. But then she comes over and she's smart and cute, and every time she leans forward you get a glimpse of her cleavage, and you figure it's pretty insecure to be jealous of a demanding job. But after six months your friends start teasing you about your imaginary girlfriend, and you realise there's a whole lot of stuff you've never talked about -- family, future plans, the address of her damn flat -- and decide to break it off. You miss the sex and being able to say, "My girlfriend..." but you get over it.

The first time you meet Gwen you think she's gorgeous. Not perfect, but one of the prettiest girls you've ever met. Your crush on her is silly, giddy and pointless -- her and her boyfriend are a sure thing, so you know you don't have a chance -- but she's also fun to talk to, to gossip with, to trade "stupid people I dealt with today" stories. Almost without noticing it, the crush fades into friendship. A few years later, she breaks up with her boyfriend and you have a girls night at her place to cheer her up. You both get really drunk and end up making out on the couch, and you're a little surprised that while the kissing's fun, the crush really did die months ago. You don't mention it in the morning -- think of it as a 'friends with benefits' type of encounter -- and when she gets back together with her boyfriend a few weeks later, you're genuinely happy for her.

You know how sometimes, you read a story in a fandom you sometimes write in, and think, "That was really good, really fun" or "that wasn't bad, but I could have done it better"?

Other times you read a story and think, "I have never written a story as complete, as stunning, as pitch-perfect and lyrical as this."

A great example of a fic that causes the latter reaction is Linear Time -, Fucked-Up Time * by [livejournal.com profile] godofwine. It's beautiful, it's lyrical, and once you fall under it's rhythm, it's mesmerising.

When the Doctor invited you to go with him, you were thinking about Ianto's smile. You were thinking about a hot bath in Ianto's bathtub, feeling his elbows and knees knocking against your own, falling asleep to his pitch-perfect humming of The Beatles.

So you said no.

You remember wanting to take him to bed, not for sex, but to tell him stories and watch him laugh, hear it, feel the waves vibrating against your skin.

You wanted to see him in t-shirt and jeans, reading a newspaper with his head propped against your shoulder.

You wanted him.

Ignore the canon of Adam (TW 2.05). Forget about the Gray backstory. Then go and read.

She recognised the man standing in Gene's office. Recognised him from the file notes, from the mugshot clipped to the psychologist's report. From one of the clippings pinned up on Gene's wall. )
