Sometimes, you read a story description, think, "Oh, that sounds a bit dodgy" but read it because you know the author or the person who recced it and it's worth a shot. And then you find that you love the story beyond words.

[personal profile] isagel's Mating Habits of the Legendary Supervillian is like that. It's after the events of Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog and I really enjoyed it. It's Billy/Bad Horse but for some reason, that just doesn't squick me out in this. Probably because it's human-consciousness trapped inside the body of a horse, so I'm not really sure if that's bestiality or just Jack Harkness's idea of an average Saturday night, but Bad Horse is an interesting character in this. He's ruthless and evil enough to be a convincing supervillain; scheming and charming enough that you can almost see why Billy's so impressed by him.

It's strange that Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog is a show I absolutely love but at the same time, I still think Billy and Captain Hammer are both jerks. It's a really fun show, but when you stop and think about it, it's not quite what it appears to be.

This story is like that. It's entertaining, and it works really well, but there's enough of Billy POV's to completely sympathise with him, while still recognising that Billy really isn't really a decent guy. He's a funny combination, but he's also quite genuinely funny and definitely fun to watch/read about.

I love the tone of this story. Fantastic little details about the Evil League of Evil (Fake Thomas Jefferson! Dead Bowie!) and a lovely moment of seeing Captain Hammer, but best of all is Billy's voice. He's the absolute height of an unreliable narrator, someone who interprets the world in a very different way from those around him and is almost able to convince you that's how the world is. I can't quite define it, but the Billy-POV I loved in the show is the same Billy in this story.

Plus, you know, there's action and adventure. And Fake Thomas Jefferson!
