"Soul searching?”

“Backpacking.”

“I hear it’s the same thing.”

Seeing Ben McKenzie in Gotham has left me with an urge for Seth/Ryan, and then I came across this and had to share. I loved the OC back in the day, but the slashy vibes were strongest in s1 (then there was Anna and Summer, who I liked for different reasons; there was Marissa who I never liked, but I could see the appeal she held for Ryan, and Taylor who was adorable). Usually, I end up reading stories set back in S1 or so, but this is a story set post-series that works really well.

What I liked most of all was how this story didn't feel like a romance so much as a detailed character study of the important people in Ryan's life, and how knowing them has let him grow into who he is. There's such a nice feeling of growth, of settling into his own skin, of painful learning from love and loss, and coming through the other side with hope for the future.

I like this Ryan, who thinks and feels a lot more than he verbally says. Seth, through Ryan's eyes, is dorky and attractive and annoying and wonderful. He's not perfect but he is incredibly important to Ryan and that's so clear throughout this story.
