Back in the day (I nearly said "a long, long time ago" but I resisted), I was very fond of Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. Let's be honest, along with Amidala and her costuming (those costumes really deserve their own cast listing), Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan was my favourite part of The Phantom Menace.

And then I came across this story. Which perfectly sums up so much that I like about the Jedis (Coruscant, the Temple, the discipline, being part of such a large order) and does so while keeping Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan so very human. I liked the pacing of this and the Obi-Wan POV (snarky and dependable, someone who believes in Jedi traditions without mindlessly loving all of them, someone who puts in effort to succeed even when he's not entirely sure what he's missing). I think what I really loved was the change from being Qui-Gon's padawan -- being so close, being able to take that company for granted -- to being a knight, standing as an independent adult and coming to terms with that.

(Master/apprentice relationships can work for me, but independent choice works for me so much more.)

I may not be doing a good job of describing it but pining and acceptance and personal growth and this wonderful strong bond and deep fondness -- it's really worth reading. It worked so well for me.
