I'd got as far as "more chemistry than a lab full of test tubes", that being the only scientific equipment I can remember - oh, and Bunsen burners - but it was never going to get much better.
I'd heard a version of the Sorkin-v-Charles squabble rumour, only in this case it was over the 'fine hound' quote; so, unless Sorkin really lets things seethe, I doubt it would have had impact on second season. Also, the rest of the story makes no sense - if a writer really has it in for an actor, I wouldn't expect him then to sit down and write that actor a really good, meaty, dramatic storyline with lots of solo screen time. What I might expect him to do, if he was feeling spiteful, would be to write several scripts that sidelined the actor completely while showcasing the rest of the cast, and/or to give him weak storylines, or ones that made his character look stupid. (Umm ... did Sorkin quarrel with Rob Lowe, by any chance?) So I'd have no trouble believing that the Hillary Clinton storyline, or the CSC poll storyline sprang out of a difference of opinion.
It does seem to be a particularly persistent and prevalent rumour, whatever the actual story is, and I suspect there's probably at least a grain of truth in it; Sorkin, we know, can be a little bit vicious (see the great TWOP feud for evidence - and that was after his drug bust, if he was doing a lot of coke while he was writing SN he was probably bouncing off the walls half the time), and I have an almost completely unfounded suspicion that Josh Charles probably isn't all sweetness and light either. (I base this, in case you were going to ask, largely on the fact that I fancy him rotten, and I know what sort of man I always fancy. Plus dumping Jennifer Connelly the day before the Oscars, which was a wee bit caddish. Unless she dumped him. Rumours vary.)
That's all speculation, obviously - I could write for the National Enquirer, me! And no, I haven't really given it a lot of thought, I've probably spent less time thinking about it than I have typing it up!
Fancying the characters is a lot safer, at least you know where you are with them. And if you happen to write fanfic, they're completely in your power!!!
