[livejournal.com profile] pheobesmum started a SN drabble with a wonderful first line. I stole the line because I wanted to play with it myself.

Where are we going?

"Where are we going?" Dan asks softly, and Casey, as ever, misinterprets.

The black, polished metal of the elevator walls provide dark reflections; half a dozen shadowed Caseys fade into obscurity, but the one bathed in light says, "My place."

As if it's obvious.

As if that was what Dan asked.

"No, I mean, where are we going? In the broad scheme of things, what is the general direction here?"

Casey scrunches up his face, like it's a trick question. "In the general direction of my place?"

Dan sighs and the elevator ride seems interminably long. It's long enough for him to wonder if it's worth pushing Casey on this, if it's wise. Then he figures that he asked the question -- however misinterpreted -- so he should get an answer.

He turns to Casey's slightly pursed lips and tries again. "Metaphorically speaking, where are we going with this? Where, at the end of the night, do you think we'll be?"

Casey wets his upper lip, a quick flash of pink tongue as he buys time to answer. Taking a step towards Dan, he hunches down a little, and says, "My bed."

Dan rolls his eyes and then looks at his shoes. Those shoes have walked the streets of New York at 4am. They've lived through one-night-stands and Rebecca and been kicked across Casey's living room. They're probably smart enough to get what he's asking, even if Casey isn't.

"At the end of the night, I expect we'll be in my bed," Casey says slowly, like Dan's the one not understanding this conversation. "And in a week's time. And, you know, if all goes well, in a year's time, too."

Dan catches a glimpse of his reflection grinning sharply, his eyebrows still high with shock. "Yeah?"

Dipping his head, Casey smiles and runs a hand down the front of his jacket, smoothing the leather into a straight line. "That's where we're going."

Oh, I like this. I like, especially, that Casey does get it, much faster than Dan thinks he does.

And, well, I like where they're going. ;)

Casey isn't dense, he just needs a moment to translate feelings into words. He's not good at on-the-spot declarations, except that he really is.

And, well, I like where they're going. ;)

Me too. I think we should all be going to Casey's bed. *g*

*Preens* Hurrah for me and for being inspirational!

That was lovely: neurotic Danny and dense-but-not-really Casey. And, of course, that's exactly where they ought to be going.

I loved this. I like that it takes Casey a while to get the words out, but in some way that makes me feel that his feelings are genuine. I don't know how to explain it. It's not like if you wear your heart on your sleeve, like Danny does, the sentiments aren't genuine, is more like Casey plays the "being oblivious" game really well, and it would be hard to get him to say soemthing that he doesn't mean, so that when he actually comes out and says it to Danny it makes it even sweeter.

I don't know if this is making any sense to you. :)

Anyway, good job, this was great.

Yes, three cheers for Hilary!

And, of course, that's exactly where they ought to be going.

*snickers* Yeah, it really is. And your icon is incredibly well suited to this fic.

Not as far as I know, actually.

Um, which icons were you trying to save? Maybe LJ's doing something funny.

I don't know if this is making any sense to you.

*nods* I know what you mean. It's not that Dan's feelings aren't genuine; it's that Casey seems to find it harder to be open about his feelings, to make clear, emotional announcements instead of theoretical, opinionated speeches. So when he does, it feels a little bit more special, a little more genuine, because you know it wasn't *easy* for him. (When he does it, he does it well.)

Same as Danny. It's the little things -- like Dan voluntarily covering soccer without bitching, like Dan going to bat for Casey without letting Casey know -- that makes it clear how much he cares.

Hee! And for me, it just made me think of that SN fic "The Tape" (you know, the one where Dan gets his hands on a tape of college-Casey caught in some very *compromising* positions?) which isn't a bad thing. Those mental pictures aren't a bad thing at all.
