WhiteCat recs
Apr. 5th, 2003 05:38 pmMy powers of procrastination are truly legendary. Eep. I will do that assignment, I will... Just want to read one more fic first. *g*
Tonights plans:
I want to be offline around 6.30 to watch the last ep of S1 SV (which I still have on tape) and then segue nicely into SV S2. (Woo-hoo! SV back on TV!) Then, The Bill. Then... bed? Assignment? One of the two...
Fic rec:
There are some authors who who love dearly, even if you forget to check up on them constantly, and only get around to every so often when someone else rec's them. I'm like that with WhiteCat. Love her fics dearly, but only read her stuff ever so occasionally.
Admittedly, when I was more involved in Fushigi Yuugi, I read a lot more of WhiteCat's fiction. She has a wonderful way of getting inside a character's head. Whether it's a gen piece, or a slash piece, or even the occasional het fic, she has a great way of expressing just what was going through their minds, the secret fears and hopes, the experiences that have made them who they are. Basically, her characterisation is wonderful.
She also has that wonderful ability to reflect canon in her writing. To give you feeling of living in that universe. Her FY fics have a sense of action, of heroics, with the underlying sharp bite of loss and darkness that you feel in the series. Her Yami no Matsuei fic, Look My Way, captures that psychological edge, the intense and almost melodramatic emotional responses that make the series so enjoyable. Ordinary Heroes captures that feeling of adventurous youth that suffuses the HP books and shows a side of Neville that just makes you smile.
Her two Good Omens fics capture Aziraphale and Crowley wonderfully. Friday Afternoon gives us a lovely little peek into their lives, when they're not dashing about the countryside trying to avert the Apocalypse, and Vaguely Downwards explains just how you can saunter vaguely downwards and be damned.
