It's always interesting to read something by someone who clearly has experience with not-for-profits and large organisations, and I have to say the comments about direct democracy are really good points. I work for a big local NFP and it's nowhere near the scale of volunteer labour that AO3 has, and we're well-funded and we still struggle to get big projects and changes done well. (We struggle so bad at it. Overall, we area force for good in teh community and I'm proud of what we do and the lives we improve, but when it comes to changing the organisation -- it's like carrying water uphill in your hands. It's slow, tedious and not very effective.)
It's a really fascinating read and there are much smarter people on my reading list who'd have bigger thoughts about it than me.

Date: 2023-05-23 04:28 am (UTC)It's an interesting point about the structure and how OTW has grown into a huge thing -- so much bigger than it initially seemed -- and it's too big to pivot quickly without a clear structure/responsiblities.
