I've wasted today, stuffing around playing Solitaire (and Spider Solitaire) and watching Chopper and Desperado. I should be cleaning and studying, but... Nyeh, couldn't be bothered. *bg*

Chopper wasn't bad, but a bit gory for my tastes. I'm fairly certain I'm not supposed to sympathise with Chopper Reid, but I kinda do.

Desperado? I love that film. I think the thing that I love so much about it is the strong atmosphere to it, you can almost feel the Mexican heat. It's also the broken innocence to Antonio Banderas' character, the obvious pain mixed with anger, with his heartfelt prayer "Give me the strength to become what I was, and forgive me for what I am.". It's always intriguing to see these characters who have adapted to their current situation, who have become darker but still retain part of their inner purity.

There's the earthy, playful sensuality of Selma Hayek with her low-cut tops, feminine skirts and quick smile. There's such a strong chemistry between the two of them that is very convincing that simply sizzles on screen. There's the sincerity to Steve Buscemi's character, regardless of his use of lies there is an honest concern for his friend's life and soul.

The entire film has this gritty rawness to it, characters hurt, and mourn, and erupt in anger. There's no ultimate good deed, there's just vengence and pain. There's no ultimate meaning behind everyone's actions, but there is a strong sense of how meaningless the destruction and death really is. Despite this, despite the violence and the pain, it's an uplifting film with a hopeful ending and a good sense of closure to it.

It's a film that I could watch again and again. I don't have too many of those films. Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet, I can always watch, and I've seen Dogma so many times now, and I still love it. Earthgirls Are Easy, Breakfast Club, Labyrinth, the two Bill and Ted films and all the Monty Python films are also favourites.

*sees icon*

*squee*

Wold you believe that your icon was mentioned in a RL conversation I had with a friend last week? We were talking about the appeal of the Labyrinth, and she mentioned the "Gay Goblin Pants" icon... Heh. Sometimes, fandom is a very small world! *g*

Anyway, glad I'm not the only one to love that film. Everytime I watch it I adore it, but when you try to explain it, sometimes it's hard to... be understand it's appeal. *g*
