My Josh
1. My Josh has always worked hard to be smart and he’s proud of it.
2. My Josh is used to being the smartest guy in the room.
3. He still thinks this is generally true, except for when he’s around the other White House senior staffers. However, he sometimes forgets this.
4. He knows that the President, Leo, CJ, Sam and Toby are at least as intelligent as he is, but he tries not to rank them. It always makes him feel slightly disloyal when he catches himself thinking about it.
5. My Josh has always been attracted by a challenge. This has frequently shown in his dating choices.
6. My Josh loves the chase and loves trying to convince girls to date him. He frequently likes it more than he likes actually dating them.
7. My Josh likes all of his meat to be so well cooked that it’s virtually burnt. Even after all these years, watching Sam eat a steak still makes him slightly queasy. Meat shouldn’t still be pink when you eat it.
8. My Josh is attracted to Donna, likes her mind and body, but wouldn’t act on it. He tells himself it’s because she’s his assistant and his relationship have a history of ending awkwardly. It would make work uncomfortable, and he knows that his job would be twice as hard without Donna.
9. The stronger reason is that she knows him too well. That makes him uncomfortable.
10. My Josh only told Sam about Joanie once, many years ago when he was very drunk. He can’t remember much about that night other than stumbling over words and crying into Sam’s shirt. He pretends that he can’t remember it at all.
11. My Josh is very proud of himself and the Bartlet administration. He knows that this pride is more than justified by their abilities.
12. My Josh has always thought of Sam as one of the best men that he has ever known. He knows that he doesn’t always show it, but his friendship with Sam has always been important to him.
13. My Josh is convinced that he is far more charming than he actually is. Sometimes, it’s his own confidence in his charm that actually charms others.
14. My Josh is a natural flirt. Most of the time, he wouldn’t consider it flirting, just being his charming self.
15. My Josh has never been accused of being a gentleman or being chivalrous. He thinks that’s okay, because chivalry has always seemed to assume an underlying chauvinism.
16. My Josh doesn’t consider himself sexist. He may make jokes to annoy CJ, but he honestly believes that women are as capable as men, except they’re generally better groomed.
17. Sam is the exception to that generalisation.
18. In retrospect, my Josh knows that he sometimes acts like a jerk. He never seems to realise this at the time. He frequently wishes he did.
19. If he did realise at the time, he’d go out of his way not to offend and hurt those closest to him. But he’d still be a jerk to those he didn’t care about.
20. My Josh has been told he’s a good kisser. He knows it’s true.
21. As a child, his favourite food was movie popcorn. As an adult, he doesn’t go to the cinema often, but he always has popcorn in the cupboard for watching the game.
22. His backpack generally has an apple (sometimes a few days old), a pad of paper, a few files that he should have read (but aren’t urgent), a novel that he knows he’ll never get time to read and assorted chewing gum and candy. When he occasionally empties it out, he always finds about five blue pens and three black pens at the bottom. He’s not sure where they come from, because he can never find a pen in his bag when he needs one.
23. As a kid, he wanted to be a ballerina, an astronaut, a baseball player and an acrobat. For a few weeks, he wanted to be a fireman, but he gave up that idea after losing Joanie. He still doesn’t think he’d be a good fireman.
24. A week before Joanie’s birthday, he still spends time working out what he would have got her this year. He still remembers to call his dad on his birthday, and spends the call talking to his mom.
25. My Josh tends to doodle when he’s bored, and sometimes when he’s thinking. He has a lot of notes from meetings with scribbles in the margins. He considers it a sign of an active mind, much like a messy desk.
