I don't think it'll surprise anyone if I say that my favourite SV (W100) drabble this week was Winging It by
hyperfocused. Clark and Lex commenting on ITSOTG? Of course I'd love it.

Am I the only one who gets ridiculously thingy about crossovers? I mean, it's a drabble, and still, as amused as I was, after reading it I still thought that you can't have that crossover because Superman is referenced in WW (Josh mentions Kryptonite in a conversation to Donna). Am I being silly? Do other people have this reaction too? That if one show references another, you can't cross them over without explaining that away?
I think I'm just overly pedantic. *g*

Hey, I've kinda packed! Well, I packed one bag for going away, and the other one will just be a backpack with a change of clothes and bathroom stuff, so I'll do it tomorrow evening. *g*
I'm going to buy Weird Al tickets tomorrow at lunch. Borrowed the money from Mum! *g*
ETA: Did anyone catch Charmed? Was it a repeat? Mind you, I don't care enough to turn on the TV and check, it's just a vague curiousity. (I miss Cole. Even if he was annoying me and needed to be killed off earlier. I still miss him. So cute!)

Date: 2003-08-07 03:31 am (UTC)I don't think it's intended to lessen the validity of the show it makes reference to, more like increase the validity of itself.

Date: 2003-08-07 03:42 am (UTC)*nods* Yeah, but can you then have a serious, believable crossover when one show acknowledges that the other is just a TV show?
See, once Oz and Xander talk about Kryptonite, it's pretty hard for me to believe that you could have a SV/BtVS crossover. (Same for a Dawson's Creek/Buffy crossover. Spike watches the show, so it wouldn't work.)
The characters have already shown knowledge that the other show is not, in fact, real. Hence, it's no longer two groups of real people meeting. It's a group of real people meeting characters that they know are fictional.
It spins my head a little, to be honest.
Of course, you can always get around this. Te's Oz/Lex fic does a wonderful job of showing that Oz knows about Superman canon, and using another comic character (with "interdimension jump"ing abilities) to explain how Oz got into a world that he would consider fictional. (Of course, it's also got snarky conversations and hot smut, so there's a reason it's a fave. Plus, first SV fic I ever read, because it was Oz. *g*)

Date: 2003-08-07 04:03 am (UTC)You can quite easily write it off as the people from one show reacting in a "oh wow! so you guys are actually real!". or just ignore it.
In relation to Buffy/SV or or anything and SV, I wouldn't take references to the Superman myth as any way related to SV itself.
I just tend to ignore anything like this, it just makes it unfun.

Date: 2003-08-07 09:19 am (UTC)I think the way most crossover writers deal with it is to do a teeny canon warp. By saying that their crossover is in a universe where both shows exist, you're saying, "Stick with all of Buffy canon *except* this one reference."
Is it cheating? Yup. Is it technically an AU? Also yup. So yeah, you have a good reason for being bugged by it.
(I tend to not notice it til it gets pointed out to me. But then again, I'm an AU 'ho. *g*)

Date: 2003-08-07 03:49 pm (UTC)Heh. It's not a big thing that bugs me, it's just one of those little things that... generally, that occurs after I've read the crossover, actually. I enjoy the ride, and it's only on reflection that I realise...
Although, I think I've also been spoiled by reading West Wing/Sports Night crossovers. They don't mention each other, and they're both Sorkin flows, so the basic styles of conversations and reactions are similar.
