Remember my Sam-love? Now add my Dan-love, and imagine a crossover. *g*
Yeah, You Just Have to be Chocolate Cake is a Sam/Dan fic that works. Not a happy ending, just two guys that had a one night stand and occasionally run into each other. It's a good fic, with five scenes set over five years, which blends the two worlds nicely and acheives a crossover without any obvious character assasination.
If Sam and Dan did meet, it would be like this. And the ending would be like this too, disillusioned and uncertain; two men who have seen the world, who have struggled through it, and in the end, no longer believe in happy endings.

I'm trying to work out whether I believe in this pairing, or if they're similar enough to feel almost incestuous. The jury's still out.

Date: 2003-08-18 04:23 pm (UTC)I think it's a case of me being overly picky. The fic's good, the writing style is clear, and the set up doesn't feel too forced (a little out of the ordinary, sure, but not overwhelmingly so). The casts of both shows are very well characterised (okay, I have issues with the Sam characterisation, but that's me) and the dialogue is that typical snarky and touching style of Sorkins. So by all accounts, I should love this fic.
But I don't. I just... It's enjoyable to read, intriguing, interesting, but it just doesn't grab me, doesn't make me laugh out loud, doesn't really make me feel for them, doesn't really make me stop and think.
I'm trying to work out why. On the one hand, it could just be that Sam bugs me just a bit (can't quite put my finger on why he rubs me the wrong way, he just does) and on the other, it could be the pairing itself. Josh has been considered Sorkin's alter ego, and Dan is so obviously similar to Josh that it's hard not to see him as another Sorkinalike. And that makes them just similar enough to be a bit... creepy. (Yeah, I think I'd have similar issues with Donna/Ainsley, because of the physical resemblance. As you can tell, twincest really isn't a kink of mine. *g*)

I'm just going to put it aside. I've read through it again, and I stand by my comments. Technically, it's a great fic, but it just doesn't hit that spot for me.
