Horatio ramblings...
Feb. 26th, 2003 10:21 amFinally watched some Hornblower last night. Still haven't seen last weeks' episode, but I down to just one to go. I may be able to knock that one off tonight. *g*
I find Horatio extremely slashable, although I don't actually believe that the character himself is gay. He just has this wonderful tension and intensity when he interacts with the other characters. He is magnetic, but I think that his only real love is for the Navy itself. He likes other characters, respects and admires them, is very fond of some, but I think that in essence he is a fairly solitary figure, who's devotion to his job will always far outweigh his devotion to any person.
It's because of this that I can see the potential for many a slashy pairing with Horatio. He cares for all rather equally, and it's obvious to my mind that it's other people who freuently fall head over heels for Horatio, and would do anything for him. Horatio/Archie I love, because I adore Archie, and it is obvious that Archie adores Horatio, (although I doubt that Horatio sees Archie as anything more than a dear friend). Really, the same goes for Horatio/Bush. Horatio/Pellew is pretty strong (ie. impossible to miss those vibes), although I doubt that Pellew would act upon it due to his rank, and I honestly believe that Horatio himself respects and admires Pellew, wants to be like him rather than sleep with him.
The pairings between Horatio and women seem the same to me. He cares for them, certainly, but they will always come second to the Navy, while they love him passionately. He would be a good husband and take his obligation and duty to her in his stride, always support her financially, if not emotionally, but I doubt he would ever feel much passion for her.
All in all, I think Horatio's a bit of a cold fish, emotionally. Easy to love from a distance, but not actually a very healthy choice in the long run. I'll still cheer him on for the hero that he is, but it's interesting that he may be someone I admire, without being someone I would wish to imitate.
