out_there: B-Day Present '05 (President Lex Missing)
Went offline last night to watch SV and The Bill. Just as SV started, I remembered that I'd forgotten to call mum, so I gave her a call. Ended up being recruited as a bit of a beta reader for my brother's assignment, a comparison between Poe's "Annabelle Lee" and Frost's "Mending Walls". Not exactly how I planned to spend the evening, but I taped SV so all was well.

I really loved Vortex (S2 Ep1 - that is the title, right?). It worked so well. I mean, up until the last scene, I was loving everyone in it, Lex (woobie!), Clark, Chloe, Martha, Jonathon, Lana... The only two things that I didn't adore was:

1) Clark, when upset and not well-lit, has frightening teeth. I mean, forget the rest of the superpowers, those teeth are glow-in-the-dark and highly unnerving.

2) Lana at the end, with the demanding of the secrets... Hmmm... Although, looking at it from a textual, not meta-textual, point of view, she was warranted in that reaction.

I also think it's interesting as Lana has basically been presented to us as the "Good Girl", the female version of virtuous Clark, and that her reaction was simply a less sneaky (and less well-funded) version of Lex's search for the truth. I'm wondering if they meant to validate Lex's response to being saved or if it was subtextual. Either way, they have now set up the reason why we should be wary of Lex (his ability to lie, his hesitations) and redeemed his searching for the truth. It's interesting.

I'm enjoying reading Lanning Cook's latest SV and I'm only halfway through. Her Martha is a force to be reckoned with; her Clark is heartbreakingly sincere (and not responsible for boybands *g*); her Lex is a Luthor through and through, strong and determined, with a bitter, brittle edge; and her Jonathon is a wonderful father, and definately 'cool'. I love her characters completely, and she makes me feel for them so much.

*sigh* Sometimes, there's nothing better than a great fic, and Groundwork is a great read. Can't believe it took me this long to sit down and read it.

Plus, she has a great sense of slightly snarky humour:
Clark kept his head on the table and his eyes pinched shut. Listening was bad enough; watching would have been too horrible to describe. People had hell all wrong. Hell wasn't fire and brimstone and guys running around with pitchforks. Hell was hearing your mother say the word "condom."

Still working on the assignment. Kicking myself for not getting it done last weekend, but don't pity me 'cause it's completely self-inflicted.

You know, I'm fairly certain that "Thou shalt not procrastinate" was the eleventh commandment. (It ended up being dropped because no-one could live up to it. *g*)

Argh! Not happy with the speed of my internet, and the number of annoying sites out there.

I want to download two fonts for Microsoft Word (Univers47CondensedLight and UniversCondensed) and I can't find either of them. I've got to be going insane. I mean, seriously, they're fairly basic fonts, we have them at work and I need them for this assignment, and I just can't find them.

Meanwhile, I trying to download the latest Acrobat Reader in the hope that I'll be able to rint out some of the forms I need for this assignment. As it is, everytime I open a form, it can't find 'color such-and-such' so the blue, or grey, background comes out black and the writing can't be read. (Since the Acrobat Reader was 3.0, and the latest one is 5.0, I'm hoping it's just old software that's the problem.)

I love computers, and the internet, but when they don't work they're a pain in the butt. *grrr*

Give me a P! Give me a R! Give me an O...

Yep, still avoiding the study. On the good side, I've been avoiding it by looking over the boozefest thingy, and adding Lois to it. It's decided that it wants three scenes, not just one. I have the horrible fear that it's going to grow and grow and never reach a conclusion. It'll just be this fic full of conversation after conversation, leading nowhere and signifying nothing. *g*

I have no self-control...

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] weredonut...

5 songs you hear on the radio you simply must crank up
1. "Old Fashioned Lover boy" by Queen (Anything else by Queen too.)
2. "Help" by the Beatles (Once again, most other songs by them too.)
3. "Funky Cold Medina" or whatever that song is called...
4. "Love Shack" by the B52's
5. "Hotel California" by the Eagles (maybe? Who's it by?)

Hmmm... And, considering I listen to Triple J, number three is the only one I even occasionally hear. *g*
