Earlier today I was having a discussion with
happyminion regarding the possibility of Lois joining the SV cast. Now, apart from our reservations (casting being based on looks rather than ability, the producers having no clue who the canonical Lois is, and the writers' using nasty tricks to make her look good in comparison to Lana and Chloe), there's another problem with this.
Mainly, there really isn't a place for Lois on SV, it's been taken by Lex. Now, before everyone starts sniggering at the obvious slashy implications of this idea, think about it. Canonically, although Lex and Lois were always opposed, they did show similar characteristics. Out of the main trio of Lex, Lois and Clark, Lex and Lois have always been the two who are worldly, experienced and sophisticated. They are both shown to be devious and be able to lie well when needed (admittedly, Lois always uses this for noble reasons, such as uncovering stories, while Lex uses them for his own manipulations, but they do use the same basic skills). As characters, both are sexually attractive, and comfortable in their own skin, but both avoid long term relationships (apart from Lois with Clark). They are both career driven, intelligent and ambitious, and both have been shown to be self-orientated in these respects. They are also strong-minded individuals who don't accept the limitations of social norms.
In traditional canon, the big difference between the two has always been the good guy/bad guy divide between them. Lex furthers his own evil attempts at world domination, while Lois tries to uncover the evil schemes. However, in SV this basic difference does not yet exist. SV-Lex shows all of these characteristics without the evil. His motivation and actions may be ambigious at times, but we also see him use less than pure methods to acheive good ends (similar to Lois, yet again).
It's interesting that regardless of when the mythos is set, the character who acts as the main foil to Superman/Clark has some fairly basic similarities. I'm guessing they're used because they manage to let Clark shine - he looks very good in comparison without drawing away from the different brand of goodness in his companion. Or, as Wendi far more eloquently put it,
That's probably why the SV Lex seems pretty similiar to canon Lois, because they *do* have their own brand of worldy goodness that contrasts nicely and exists alongside Clark's wholesome otherworldly goodness. It's intriguing that SV is the first widely popular retelling of Superman mythos without Lois, and from the way that it's been created, there isn't really a place for her anymore as the love of Clark's life. I also think this is why it appears to be such a slashy show. We're used to seeing Lois, the love of his life, step up and define Clark by the contrast between them, but in SV, it's Lex that gets this role.
This also explains why SV fic freqently tends to show Lois as virtually being a female version of Lex, simply because while Lex is closest to Clark, and until Lex becomes evil, he is the male version of the traditional canon Lois. Following this theory to it's conclusion, it's unlikely that we'll see Lois in SV before Lex becomes evil, simply because until then, she has no valid dramatic role to play.
