Writing Roundup 2011
Jan. 12th, 2012 03:04 pmLast year's stats
Fannish works posted this year:
January:
These prompt responses weren't on last year's wordcount so they can go in here.
Sunday Tea - Sherlock, John/Sherlock, 450 words.
As far as John's concerned, afternoon tea should be a cuppa and a few biscuits, not finger sandwiches and croissants, colourful macaroons and poetically described tea choices. He wants a cuppa, not an 'indulgent experience for the senses' that costs over twenty quid each. But come hell or high water -- or in Sherlock's case, mysterious disappearances and puzzling murders -- Sunday afternoons mean afternoon tea.
Silence is Telling - Generation Kill, Brad/Nate, 411 words.
There are some things no self-respecting Marine would ever say aloud.
Flight - Prison Break, Michael/Alex, 591 words.
If Michael needs a few days, a few weeks, a few months to get lost, so be it. If Michael wants to spend hours behind the wheel, squinting into the sunlight, following country backroads without saying a word, Alex can live with that. If Michael wants to avoid people, avoid motels and camping grounds, wants to spend alternate nights shifting in the passenger seat or twisted awkwardly across the backseat, that's fine too. Alex will defend his right to go a little crazy. If any deserves a good mental breakdown, it's Michael Scofield.
February:
And the Pattern Breaks - Inception, Eames/Arthur, 1,000 words. Written for the challenge. Also on DW.
Arthur knows that within a week, Eames will show up on his door, no matter which city he chooses. Like Arthur knows Eames kicks the covers in his sleep and makes perfect boiled eggs, white cooked and yolk still runny. Like he knows this visit will last for a month, maybe two, before one of them answers a call and has to be somewhere else.
May:
The Art of Flat-Sharing - Sherlock, John/Sherlock, 5,708 words. Written for the challenge. Also on DW.
Everybody likes John Watson. He's down-to-earth and unassuming, and standing next to Sherlock, well... It's no wonder everyone assumes Sherlock's the horrific flatmate.
It's as irritating as any false assumption. Sherlock may be difficult at times, but John is hardly the flat-sharing ideal.
Conclusion:
5 stories, which is half as many as last year.
Breakdown by fandom:
2 Sherlock - 6,158 words
1 Generation Kill - 411 words
1 Prison Break - 591 words
1 Inception - 1000 words
Total words written: 8,160
Thoughts:
This has got to be my least productive writing year, at least in terms of actual finished fic posted. It was my last year of study and my first year of a new role, and I was busy. Especially last April where if you ignore the public holidays for last Easter (which I spent studying), the only days I wasn't at work for at least a few hours was the 3rd and the 30th. It was hellishly busy.
Mind you, I also stopped doing the monthly round-ups and I think that had an impact on my productivity.
I spent the second half of the year working on Sherlock wip (the working title was "Psychosomatic" but I think the actual title will be "Leave the Signs and Sirens"). It's not beta'd and posted so it's not going in 2011 -- it might need a lot of work, I'm really not sure -- but it's only 25k. That still wouldn't bring me anywhere near previous years' totals.
I also wrote a little Kurt/Blaine snippet but it's really part of a much longer story (it's going to be something like "A Series of Firsts" and show little scenes of Kurt and Blaine surviving the year apart when Kurt gets into NYADA and Blaine's stuck at McKinley. It'll probably be jossed by the first ep of S4, but this story's been floating in the back of my head for a while and deserves to be written down.)
Oh well. At least it won't be hard to beat this year's results.
ETA: Oh, I forgot that one of last year's goals was to upload everything to AO3. I did that. Every fic I've written is now there, all 230 of them.
ETA2: As
celli pointed out, I passed the CPA this year. That's a pretty big acheivement.
Goals for 2012:
I have three different Glee fics (all Kurt/Blaine, two AUs and one futurefic) that I'd like to write. I want to write something for Inception (I have the title but not the plot) and I want to write an AU for Hawaii 50. I keep thinking back on that Heroes AU that I never finished (10k of words feels like a lot to assign to the deadwips pile) and I might write more Sherlock once I've seen the new episodes.
Basically, I'd like to get back to writing regularly. I miss it.
Audience Participate Time:
If you got to the end of this self-indulgent post, I'm opening up the floor. Any questions you want to ask about the 2011 stories? Or any questions in general? Feel free to ask.
