Popslashy thoughts...

Hmmmm... You know, I can't tell if I like Jae's writing or not. I mean, I've certainly read a few fics, and I keep coming back and reading one when it's rec'ed, but... I'm not sure if I like them.
It's like... it's like a really rich sauce. It's not what you're used to, and you think it tastes good, but it's also a bit too much, too overwhelming. You finish the meal and you're not sure if you actually like it.
Take Reindeer Games for example. It's not a Chris or a JC I particularly like, let alone relate to. There are some moments that just make me cringe in embarrassment for the characters, that just hit the wrong note overall. There's a lack of morality, or convictions, or something. I can't quite put my finger on it.
The writing itself is good. The characters themselves are recognisable, if not particularly likeable. There are lines that make me snigger and smile, and the emotions ring true. But there's an underlying theme or idea there that just makes me uneasy. The emotions are a little too raw, the characters are a little too distilled, and I get to the end of the fic feeling surprisingly unsatisfied.
Of course, I could take this as a sign to stop reading slash and get some work done, but I think that's overreacting. *g*
