Overheard at work: "I'm just waiting for Bruce Wayne to get back to me."
What was actually said: "I'm just waiting for Bruce Wainright to get back to me."
Heh.

If there's any other Aussie OC fans, I just recced a couple of stories to
laylee which do *not* contain spoilers. Hence, if you want to read Ryan/Seth fics wihtout being spoiled for next week's ep, check out the links here.

Had lunch with
charliequinn and a slasher co-worker (I think) of hers. Was a lot of fun. Sat in Melbourne Central food court, squeeling over various fannish stuff, including the total *wrongness* of Matt/Christian (I have yet to find a slasher watching Mip/Tuck who *doesn't* see that pairing very clearly), popslash (specifically Lance and JC *beams* Apparently there's some pictures of them leaning against a wall, not touching, but really giving out the "he's my boyfriend" vibe), hobbitslash (oooh, someone who actually read the books!), and a bit of Paris Hilton gossip that
charliequinn used to warp our minds. We also compared the mocking ways that you can give someone the finger (apparently the rather common one from my schools in Canberra, "Peace, turn the world around, and halve the population", was not so common to them).
I also walked away with Justified, so I may be mocking that all weekend.

Since I am a whore for physical affection (okay, I'm not, but it'll make me grin), I'm doing the Hug meme:

*HUGS* TOTAL!
Hug me!

Either a lot of people don't get how damn *good* The OC is, or my ability to judge the quality of shows has been completely corrupted by my love of SV... And the fact that I have watched and enjoyed dodgy shows (including, at one stage, Dawson's Creek - although I always mocked it, even while I watched)...
I mean, in comparison, The OC has *acting* and *plot*. The girls are all skanky ho's, but it's actually an intriguing and interesting show.
But it IS slashy, so I'll be tuning in next week because that's the sort of person I am. :P
Yay! I couldn't believe I had lunch with two slashers, and neither of them had seen it. I could have spent all lunchtime squealing over the cool stylishness of Ryan and the adorable geekishness of Seth. (Heh. And, if you think this ep was slashy, you should have seen the first ep. *g*)

!!! Where have they been LIVING?!?! Not on LJ, apparently. I never thought we'd get it over here because it seemed like such a distinctly American-themed show, but lo, the off-season doth deliver. :P

Well, it was more that I was looking for it, having heard so much. I knew it had more potential than that. It was the end bit, with Adam Brody (Seth?) reacting to The Other Guy's (Ryan?) plans to move in with them that was the cincher for me. "Ohhh, THIS is what they're talking about! Oh yeah, I can see that." :P

Date: 2003-12-12 04:57 am (UTC)Not at all, I'm just teasing. *g* And wondering if the "quality" that I see, that totally gets to me, is just not there.
I mean, my past viewing experiences aren't exactly pure quality... *g*

Okay, not all of the characters. I was thinking more specifically of the guy who plays Ryan. Would you disagree that he's a highly convincing actor?
Not big LJ fen, but they are both big popslashers. That could explain it.

The first one had Seth's first introduction to Ryan. It had Seth bitching and pouting and whining at his parents that Ryan couldn't stay. It had Seth looking very nervous/anxious to impress as he sailed with Ryan and told him about his dream to take Summer to tahiti. It had Seth *hugging* Ryan goodbye when he first left (and poor Ryan looking so utterly surprised/uncomfortable with the physical affection, but not actually displeased), and giving Ryan his map to tahiti!
It had Seth being picked on by Luke and the other water polo players, and being called queer, and Ryan coming to his defense with a few impressive punches.
It had Seth trying to stop Ryan running away by offering to go with him. Then coming up with an idea for him to stay in his mom's model home. It also had Summer pushing her way in, and driving them there, and Seth being so passive-aggressively bitchy to her it was highly amusing. And, after Ryan had been wondering about staying, and Summer told him to stay for a few days and Ryan agreed, it had Seth's joking/jealous comment "So when she tells you to stay, you agree?" which made me laugh.
It just... Dude, they're so sweet, and cute, and geeky, and oh, man, so made to make out with each other.

Date: 2003-12-12 05:14 am (UTC):D I'm one of those irritating hypocrites who can love something cheesy and bad like 1960s Batman (because I think it's wonderfully hilarious) but then can't watch something soapish like 'Melrose Place', 'Passions' or 'The OC'. I think it's just the soap factor that gets me - I'm the same with 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', so it's not an indiscriminate hatred of this particular show. :P

Again, have only seen one ep, and he didn't really have much to do except look at people sadly through his fringe. A lot of his stuff for that ep wasn't dialogue, but reaction; there weren't any scenes that stand out in my mind as being exceptionally powerful, climactic character-interaction scenes. I thought he got the emotions across - I knew what he was supposed to be feeling even though, with no background, I didn't know WHY he was feeling them. :P

Ah yes - it seems to be more the 'Smallville' and 'Highlander' crowd that have embraced 'The OC'. :)
It had Seth *hugging* Ryan goodbye when he first left
I was talking to someone about why 'Smallville' is so slashy, and trying to explain to them why it has such a large slash-following. It's, to me, because the storylines and character interactions are so unnatural and prematurely intimate. In real life, people do

Date: 2003-12-15 03:15 pm (UTC)Yes, that's what I mean. You knew that he felt that way, and it wasn't because he stood there and *told* you, it was because you could *see* it.
After watching shows like Dawsons Creek and, to an extent, SV, you get used to these teen dramas where you need to follow the dialogue to understand the emotions. Think of Lana. As much as I try to like her, there are a lot of scenes where you can't really tell from her expression what she's supposed to be feeling. Same in the pilot with Clark (oh man, wooden actor. TW has improved *so* much.).
It's, to me, because the storylines and character interactions are so unnatural and prematurely intimate. In real life, people do...
Exactly. It's this sudden intimacy and caring for the other person, suddenly getting along really well. People go from strangers to risking a lot on new friends.
Although, to be honest, it's the same in West Wing and Sports Night. What sort of guy turns his back on a wife, or future-wife, to follow a career with his best friend? I mean, you can argue that they're following their own dreams, but it still seems a little... suspicious.

And for the record, that's happened to me plenty of times!
I've heard "Clex" more times than ever possible in public from people who could not be less familiar with the term :)
One-track mind!
