out_there: B-Day Present '05 (Procrastinating)

You know, I'm finding it hard to imagine anyone less likely to do any actual work than me this afternoon. I mean, seriously. When I'm actually doing some quick editing on last night's smut, while sitting at my computer, I am bored.

Meanwhile, the present tense continues to be my sneaky nemesis. I write a fic in past tense, and it slithers its way into the middle of smutty paragraphs. Not all of them, mind you. Just a few paragraphs. Then it lies low, waits for me to grow comfortable in past tense protection, before striking again. It's like lightning. Never strikes the same place twice.

And Lex is staring at me, holding his Chrissy gift. *bg* You have no idea how much a Lex can brighten up a dulled stacked desk.

I decided to write a fic in present tense once, just for the hell of it... and since then, I haven't been able to write past tense. At all. I try, and I'm slipping back into present within a few paragraphs. And I end up having to stop and think just how the hell to conjugate in past tense, which I never used to have to do.

Present tense is evil. Once it's managed to sink its teeth into you, it won't let go.

(Of course, when I'm writing something that's not fic, my tenses wander all over the place... and there's nothing I can do to stop it. Frelling grammar.)

*nods* I agree completely. I always used to be good with tenses, and then came SV fandom. You know how each fandom seems to have a particular style that most fics are written in? A certain flavour to the fics, if you will. SV style is definitely close/limited third person POV, present tense.

The number of SV fics that are along the lines of "Lex walks around the room, running his hand along the cue stick as he considers his next shot..." (for example) are mindboggling.

After being in that fandom for... well, 2-3 years now, present tense keeps attacking. You're right. It's truly Eeeeeevil!
