A co-worker turned 21, and they had a chocolate mousse cake. Damn. Why couldn't he have been born *after* Easter?

On a happier note, I was looking through the transcript for "The Apology" and I'm still amused by Dan's suggestion of what's cool:
Casey: Can I just say one more thing about the Starland Vocal Band?
Dan: Sure.
Casey: 1978, they win the Grammy for Best New Artist. You know who they beat? Elvis Costello. Now is it your belief that Elvis Costello isn't cool?
Dan: No, it's my belief that the Grammy voters aren't cool.
Casey: Now they tell me.
Dan: Hey, I've been trying to tell you for --
Casey: Who else isn't cool that I thought was cool? Is Nicholson cool?
Dan: Oh yeah, Nicholson's cool.
Casey: J.D. Salinger?
Dan: Yes.
Casey: The Muppets?
Dan: Yes, but not Barney.
Casey: There's a subtle distinction.
Dan: You gotta feel it.
Casey: Zamfir, Master of the pan flute.
Dan: Very, very cool.
Casey: Really?
Dan: Yes.
Casey: Yeah? What about, uh...?

Hee!

Oh, Barney. I never have been able to hear what he says there. He's quite right, Barney's terminally uncool. But he was just lying about the panpipes guy. Leading poor Casey on. T'sk.

Yeah, me too.

Hee! I don't know. Panpipes are kinda cool. Well, for a guy who plays golf, I think Dan's pretty much right. *g*

I always have to laugh when he mentions the Muppets--because it had to be about the time they were shooting this episode that Josh knew he was about to do (or just had done) his bitty role in Muppets From Space.

I swear, Sorkin didn't write 'characters' per se, as much as he exaggerated some qualities of the people he had in the roles. (I'm beginning to be suspicious that Josh may well have as dark a side as Dan--he just looks so *sad* in many of his photos since then.) Well, ok, maybe a few characters. I don't believe that Felicity is anywhere near Dana's ditzyness. But the hidden strength? Oh yeah.

I love subtext, both gay and other. :)

Hee! Yes, I love that little in-joke.

Hmmm... no. Josh Lyman and Dan Rydell are too alike for me to believe it's Josh Charles' personality. It's Sorkin's personality, lightly hidden. (Sorkin himself has admitted that Josh Lyman is his alter ego...)

But, I will say that he has a talent of writing to the actors strengths. A lot of his writing works so well because it's so wonderfully casted. The actors always reflect the characters really well.

I don't know...I've never seen that Josh and Danny are *really* all that much alike; not at base. The similarities seem a bit forced to me, and situational, like having inadvertently caused a sibling's death.

I'd allow that Sorkin's original vision was to make Josh WW's version of Danny. However, Josh appeared a year into Sports Night--and SN's second year became a lot more 'personal' than the first. Danny changed a lot. At the time, there were rumors (from not-completely-unreliable sources) that Danny's downturn was a sort of 'punishment' of JC by AS for a nasty disagreement in early second-season rehearsals (or first/second ep shootings, don't remember exactly).

Regardless of the origin, however, JC played it to perfection.

I agree about the casting--Sorkin's writing is wonderful, but the strength of the cast is what makes it truly great. It's astonishing to me that some of the cast hasn't managed to just explode into major stardom (Sabrina, Felicity, etc), because it's not due to lack of talent.

Bwahahahaa! So wouldn't surprise me. Sorkin can hold grudges, man. But, again, I'd hold that as proof that Danny's more sorkin-written than based on JC's personality.

*nods* So damn true.

Well, I think the impression we all got at the time was that the 'punishment' was that Sorkin was going to veer sharply into personal territory, and JC was just going to have to play it, or break his contract with ugly consequences.

But hey, it's not like I was on set or anything. More's the pity.

Speaking of the other cast, I just saw an ad for a new drama with Felicity. I haven't seen her in so long, I nearly didn't recognize her. I was like, 'heey...there's a preeety lady...wait! YEAHHH!'

Now if I could just convince someone to put Felicity and Evan Rachel Wood together in something, I'd truly be in heaven. :)

Oh, great rec, btw. :)
