SN Ficlet: Intervention

Intervention

Casey walked in to find Dan spread out on the couch. With his feet hanging over the armrest and a packet of Pringles in his hand, Dan was watching the midday movie with a certain amount of fascination. After a moment, he said, "That looks like fun."

"What?"

"An intervention," Dan replied, shovelling more chips into his mouth.

"An intervention?"

"I want one."

Casey stared at Dan until Dan glanced up and gave him eye contact. "You want an intervention?"

"Yeah." Dan nodded and turned back to the screen. "It looks fun."

"Fun?"

"Friends, family, all your nearest and dearest gathering around and making you the centre of attention? Sounds fun. I want one."

Casey shoved Dan's legs out of the way and sat down. "You need to have an addiction to warrant an intervention, Danny."

"Would you throw me one?"

"Are you addicted to anything?"

Dan nodded, and stretched his legs over Casey's lap. "Definitely."

"What?"

"Huh?"

"To what are you addicted to?" Casey asked again.

"Um... " Danny trailed off, looking sheepish. "Coffee? Caffeine's an addictive drug."

Casey rolled his eyes. "The whole point to an intervention is to help you, to gather around and convince you that you don't need the addiction. To make you admit that you have a problem and you need help."

"I could fake it," Dan suggested nonchalantly.

"Really?"

"Uh-huh," Dan replied around another mouthful of chips. "I admit it! I'm an addicted....addict!"

Casey snorted and helped himself to Dan's chips. "I'm not throwing you an intervention. I'd be embarrassed."

"You spoil all my fun."

Dan: Enough to throw me an intervention?
Casey: Nobody's going to throw you an intervention, Danny.
Dan: *whines* But I want one!
Casey: You don't have an addiction.
Dan: *thinks* What about sex?
Casey: Sex?
Dan: I could be addicted to sex.
Casey: ...
Dan: Sex-addicts. They have their own AA group and everything. Well, SA group.
Casey: Even if you were adicted to sex...
Dan: Yes?
Casey: Why would I want to intervene?
Dan: *pouts* You're still no fun, Casey.
