You know what annoys me in fanfic? When authors somehow see the need to use the characters full names in the first sentence. There are much, much subtler ways to tell an audience the first and last name of a character, and this is fanfiction, so we pretty much know the names already.

But, instead of whining about that, I'm going to point to two more wonderful stories. All spoiler-free, since I haven't watched Hive yet.

Something Wicked by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone is *wonderful*. I expect that it's been recced by everyone and their grandmother at this stage, but that's because it's good. It's creepy and vivid, and *meaningful*, and utterly brilliant. Seriously, if you haven't read it, go read it. If you have, read it again. It's that good.

Retrograde by [livejournal.com profile] ltlj. Oddly enough, I'm recommending a gen piece. It's an SGA/SG1 crossover that worked well for me -- despite the fact that I only have the most rudimentary knowledge of SG1 and have no intention of watching it -- and was a wonderful example of how well Rodney, John and all the rest of the Atlantis team manage to excel under the worst conditions. (The canon for this story veers off sometime during S1, so it's a safe read.) Also, John as an efficient, heroic military leader makes me happy in so many shallow, shallow ways.

Good characterisation, good action sequence (ie: kept me interested, not tuning out), and occasional lines that cracked me up.

"Technically, Daniel's our hostage, but he keeps trying to make helpful suggestions."

"He's pointless as a hostage," Rodney snapped. "He knows how to Ascend. If we kill him, he'll just come back."

YOu're welcome. Normally, I'm not a gen girl, but that story worked for me so well.

Oh, totally. I usually avoid gen too, because most of it is basically crap. Every now and then you come across a gem like this, and it's totally worth it ^_~
