Just came across this link to the lyrics of "A - You're Adorable"

This is an old song that my Granddad used to sing to his kids, although he couldn't quite remember the words, and the tune changed just a little. When I was a little kid, this was one of a few songs that mum used to sing to us as babies. (Admittedly, we change the lyrics to :

A - You're adorable,
B - You're so beautiful,
C - You're a cutie-pie
D - You're a darling, and
E - You're exciting, and
F - You're fantastic all the time.
H, I J, K,
I could go on all day.
Because I love you,
In a very special way.

And then you start again from the beginning. *g*

I haven't thought of that in ages. I guess although no-one in the family actually played an instrument (we learned piano at one stage, and both kids learned the recorder) we were kinda musical. We had songs that we sang on the playground, that old see-saw song

See-saw, Marjorey door,
Johnnie shall have a new master.
And he shall earn but a penny a day,
Because he can't work any faster.

and two songs when we were on the swings

And he flies through the air with the greatest of ease,
That daring young man on the flying trapeze,
His movements are graceful,
All girls he can please,
And he's stolen my heart away...

Which always segued into the second tune...

Oh, oh, Antonio,
He's gone away.
Left me all alone-io,
Oh, oh, Tonio.
I long to see him with his new sweetheart.
And up we'll go with Tonio,
And his ice-cream cart...
La da da da...

(You have to sing the last bit, otherwise the tune goes wonky *g*)

<lj=cut> As we grew older, these songs were the staples for a family singalong in the car. The other staple was <lj-cut text="Norwegian Wood">Norwegian Wood:
I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me.
She showed her room. Isn't it good, Norwegian wood?
She asked me to stay, and she told me to sit anywhere.
Well, I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair.
So I sat on her rug, biding my time, drinking her wine.
We talked until two, and then she said, it's time for bed.
She said that she worked in the morning and stated to laugh. (Ha ha! Ha ha!)
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath. (Snoring noises were added here *g*)
Well, when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown.
So, I lit a fire. Wasn't it good, Norwegian wood.

</lj-cut>And, even though Mum was normally the one to lead these singalongs, I can also remember Dad singing to me, The Grand Old Duke of York. <lj-cut text="lyrics">

The Grand Old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men,
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.
And when they were up, they were up;
And when they were down, they were down;
But when they were only half-way up,
they were neither up nor down.</lj-cut>

The interesting thing is that even though I haven't sung these in years, I can still sing them and remember all the words (well, it was the way that we sung them, at any rate).
