SH Rec: Uncanny (Mycroft/Lestrade)

Some fics are fantastic at reflecting exactly the characters you see onscreen. They flesh out unseen moments and hidden motivations,a nd feel like they could easily slip into canon. Other stories, like this one, start with characters you know and then they grow in this organic, interesting way into heroes in their own right. This story is epic fantasy, definitely in the 'someone normal wakes up in a foreign fairy land' type tale, and it's very well done. It's kept me avidly reading for days.

Any story that can manage magic and battles and world-saving, with a good lot of world-building, and keep me interested is worth pointing out to other people.

Summary:

He'd read fairy tales when he was a kid, had read myths, heard snippets of folklore. Now and then he'd hear weird rumours on the streets of uncanny things that he'd dismissed as the drugged out ravings of hallucinating junkies, but now he was wondering what he'd missed, and if they really had seen things.

Greg Lestrade had always considered himself an ordinary bloke, not prone to flights of fantasy. When he is kidnapped from the streets of London and wakes in a dungeon, he must reevaluate everything he thought he knew about the world, and about himself.

Ooh, my interest is piqued! I think I've mayyyyybe read one ficlet for this pairing in the past, but your rec's got me bookmarking this. I always like the unexpected, and am looking forward to seeing where the story takes me. :)

It kept me interested, and was one of those stories that starts from fandom but really stands on it's own as a story.
