This is a long story, and yet I loved it. Too often a certain word-count goes hand in hand with meandering plot point and I develop a vague frustration and don't finish it, but this starts well, gets you interested in Sherlock and Mycroft, and then keeps growing at this wonderfully organic pace that feels satisfying and intriguing.
It's teen John and Sherlock -- which usually works for me becasue Sherlock is such an overgrown teenager even as an adult -- and young adult Lestrade and Mycroft, and... oh. It's a nice retelling of some of the plot points of s1 but from a slightly different angle, and I'd really recommend giving it a try. We have Mrs Hudson caring for the boys, we have a young Sherlock and Mycroft without parents (Mycroft too responsible and trying too hard to keep Sherlock happy, Sherlock demanding and spoiled and not quite seeing how deeply he's loved), we have John (who is everything perfect for Sherlock), and Lestrade (who is smart enough to see when rules should be broken for Sherlock).
It's really a really satisfying, well-developed world. I can't recommend it highly enough.
(And as with all my recs, everyone else might have already read this. But it was new to me, and I enjoyed it.)
