Updating my quick update....
Dec. 3rd, 2002 11:34 pmI've watched HP2 and Smallville (missed Zero, but it's on tape, so I'll watch tomorrow), and am currently watching Voyager, so I figured I might as well give a quick update (on my previous update).
1) I got the job! (That still deserves an exclaimation mark.)
2) I dyed my hair. It didn't come out the coppery red on the package, but turned out a deep auburn red instead. I'm very happy with it, especially since the blonde highlights in my hair are now red highlights. Considering that I got distracted (ie. got called about the job, then did a happy dance) and accidentally left it on twice as long as I should have, it really couldn't have turned out much better.
3) I saw Harry Potter. If you haven't seen it, this may be . Really enjoyed the film ( although I cursed the fact that I drank half a litre of water before going into the cinema and had to dash out and miss a few precious minutes). I was impressed with the graphics. The quidditch match CGI effects were much less obvious, and the snakes and spiders were pretty threatening. I love the way that Ron can look scared, but it's a pity that "being scared" or "being disgusted" seemed to almost cover the emotional range of his performance in this film.
I was looking forward to Kenneth Brannagh, and he did not disappoint me. I love Lockhart the same way I love Rimmer and S3 Wesley. Really annoying characters to actually know, but I have a very soft spot for them all the same.
My personal greivance about this film is that Harry didn't bring up the fact that Hagrid was originally framed. why didn't he claer Hagrid of both charges? Dodgy. Did that also get glossed over in the book? I gave my word that I would wait for each movie before reading each book, so I've haven't read it yet. (But I will soon.)
Loved the fact that we got to see so much more of Draco and the Slytherin common room. Well, actually I loved the fact that we got to see more of the other students, especially Seamus and Neville. (I have a soft spot for them after seeing the extra scenes on the DVD.) Same goes for seeing more Percy and Wood, and even though they don't have any scenes together, I can see the appeal of slashing those two.
I have to agree with Bernice's comments re: Dumbledore's behaviour. Dumbledore is a great wizard, but he's a very dodgy teacher and headmaster. He's a great mentor for Harry, and a good moral leader, but when it comes to teaching... His choice of DADA teachers is not good (if Dumbledore is such a wise and cluey wizard, why the heck did he employ Lockhart?) and his behaviour towards the students seems incredibly Griffindor biased. He scolds Snape in front of students, he constantly awards the Griffindors who break rules and (in the last film) he gives the House Cup to Griffindor, when the entire hall was decorated for Slytherin. He almost seems to encourage the isolation of Slytherin. It doesn't make sense. If Slytherin's are automatically "evil", don't teach them and encourage their skills. If not, and only a few go "bad", why encourage the entire school against them? You're just going to produce frustrated, bitter and well-trained young magicians.
Whoever has the "Queen Snape" icon, I am going to have to thank them for making me snigger. Right in the middle of the duel scene, and all I can think is "Hee! Queen Snape, so appropriate... " Bernice also mentioned that Snape was too nice. I think that it's just harder to show everything tainted by Harry's POV in a movie. Take the deleted potions class scene from the first film (on DVD). Although the scene plays out exactly as written in the book, Harry looks like a brat, and Snape look pretty damn sympathetic. *shruggs* I liked Snape. So perfectly the attitude of someone who know's that they are surrounded by sentimental fools, and one utter moron (I loved some of the snide jabs at Lockhart). I guess he also seems less nasty because most of the nastiness is aimed towards Lockhart, a teacher who Harry also dislikes (ie. the enemy of my enemy is my friend...) so it's easy to see just how justifiable Snape's behaviour is. (And most of his threatening through the film was easily justifiable.)
And while I'm thinking of villians... Tom Riddle? Gorgeous! I've gotta say, Hogwarts does have some cute students over the years. Lucius Malfoy? Liked a lot. Explains Draco's behaviour perfectly. Plus, he comes across as cunning, but not overly intelligent (ie. not impossible to outsmart, if only because he underestimates everyone else). As far as Dobby goes... I'm still not sure if I like him or not. As a character, he was just sitting on that fine line between vaguely amusing and really annoying.
Final verdict... All in all, I loved it.
