is happy.

You're a rosy-cheeked ray of f'ing sunshine 24/7. I bet you smile a lot and little things don't get you down. Must be nice. Fuchsia's definitely your color.

Regardless of what my mood ring says, I'm in a weird mood. I've pulled down the outside blind, so my bedroom's relatively dark and relaxing but I'm... I don't know. It's probably just the sugar from the chocolate (block one has now been consumed) and this is probably the reason why it's not a good thing to eat so much sugar. I'm not on a sugar high, just really tired and wired at the same time. Concentration feels to shot to do anything, but watching TV's just boring me (even when it's Sports Night), and I'm having trouble sticking to a fic to read.

To prove my point, I read Where We Have Been which is a very nice S2 SN Dan/Casey fic and then started to read The Memory of Hurts which is another S2 Dan/Casey fic. I got halfway through it, and then got distracted by my Friends List, and now I'm reading The Wedding Cake Theory.

I'm reading Popslash. I don't even watch pop videos, I don't even know who four out of five of the guys are, and yet I'm reading it. I'm reading a very long fic, that appears to have three very long parts, about a fandom that I try to avoid like the plague.

This is decidely odd, people.

Dude, it's actually a good fic... *waits for lightning bolts to strike her*

do you use AIM? I will distract you.

Bugger. I don't use AIM. I use MSN messenger.

I guess it is. Which is kinda a pity... *g*

You know the most intriguing thing about this pop fic? (Other than being well written... ) is that's it's got that whole hopeful and happy vibe going.

I think I'm yearning for it. At the moment, the fandoms I'm reading in is WW, SN and SV. WW and SN don't have that vibe. Generally speaking, it's people who have a good awareness of the real world, it's people who seem to survive on about 6-8 hours sleep a night and work weekends (I've done the 6 hours sleep a night thing for a week. It leaves me stressy and jittery... I need like a weekend of sleep to make up for it), who seem to live on stress and pressured jobs, and who frequently fall apart.

There's this stronger sense of how much history has happened between the characters, of knowing just how screwed up the other one is.

SV, you do have the happy hopeful fic, but you also have the apocalytic, tearing each other apart fic. They balance each other out.

So, I'm seeing the popfic as just a way to break away from the mature (not angst... just acceptance) for a bit.

Either that, or it's a highly stylised form of procrastination to avoid thinking about my WW and SV WiPs. *g*

While there is a lot of very good angsty stories in popslash, there is definitely a strong happy vibe that I enjoy a lot. It's one of the reasons I'm enjoying the fandom so much :)

Yeah, there's a real sense of promise to the fic. We had that S1 SV, but as the season's gone on, and the lying's continued, and nasty things have been said, and people (ie. Lex) have been hurt... *sigh* I think we've generally lost hope for a canonical happy ending. In S1, the denial was a lot easier.

But, I'm avoiding a new fandom. I've yet to see most of Sports Night, so no new fandom.

Besides that, I honestly don't really like their music. (There's occasional exceptions, but most of it I just roll my eyes to.) I can't be part of a fandom when I actually don't like the show/source media. It just doesn't work.

Fair enough (though I said that once too...before...*g*). But if you want to read a bit just for distraction, check out Merry's (http://trickster.org/anyroad/popslash.htm) (except for Mirage, that's not a good starting point) and torch's (http://www.strangeplaces.net/) and anything by Rhys (http://www.illuminations.nu/experimentv/).

I'm a bad, bad person, I know.

One of the things that caused me to drift away from SV a fair bit was the increasing lack of room for denial. I love Clark and Lex, and I want them to have a happy ending (with or without slash). Watching Lex try so hard to be good, and knowing that it's futile...heartbreaking :(

And I've got more pictures of some of the guys here (http://members.optusnet.com.au/eri_lyn/pretty/poppretty.htm), and a bunch of JC here (http://members.optusnet.com.au/eri_lyn/pretty/morepretty.htm).

Ah, thanks! I checked them out.

Wow, I'm kinda surprised that long hair makes such a difference to JC. Seriously, the short-haired pic of him? Looks so ordinary. Clean cut, all American boy, but ordinary.

The shots above and below with longer hair? *raowr* That's my type of pretty boy.

There's a reason he gets referred around the fandom as the prettiest boy in the world :) And you're definitely welcome. If I can tempt you with more recs, I'd love to *g*.

Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. Trying to avoid a new fandom. Trying really, really, really hard.

Thank you. *hugs Erilyn*

It was starting to bug me, just a little, that I couldn't picture them.

Heh. I probably says something about my powers of observation that it took me about three minutes to figure out who was who in the bottom photo. (It is Joey, JC at the back, Justin, Lance and Chris, right?)

Hey, I knew Joey and Justin... I just had a lot of trouble working out the other three...

Heh.

You're doing better than me if you knew Justin and Joey! I wasn't even sure if Justin was in Nsync or Backstreet before I got into the fandom *g*.

Hee! You know what? When I started reading the fic, I was witing for Kevin or Nick to appear, and then remembered they were in BSB. I have better visual memories of BSB...

Plus, they won big points with me for the halloween themed Backstreet Boys are Back music clip...

That's a great clip. They also have a great space adventure one for "Larger than Life".

Let alone the one where Howie turns into a woman...*g*

I've only seen the other ones since getting into it, but I remember the Backstreet's Back one from when it was out. Must have got played a lot :)

Yeah, it was played a hell of a lot. I'm sure I'm not the only one who isn't a fan of boybands but still loved the song.

about a fandom that I try to avoid like the plague.

Probably too late. Once the sparkle gets its teeth into you, you're doomed. Glad you're enjoying the story, though.

And if you need background info, then the *NSYNC fandom primer is a very helpful one-page intro.

Thanks for the link. That was actually highly informative and very useful. *g*

As for the fic, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't think it's enough to make me overlook the fact that I don't particularly like their music, but it was a delightful piece of escapism from my usual fandoms.

Basically, I'm blaming it on a friend. She rec'ed the fic without stating the fandom or coupling, and I'd read the first couple paragraphs before I clicked that it was popslash. By then, I just had to keep reading. It was very interesting, and your JC POV is intriguing, so I wanted to see where it went.

The entire fic was extremely well-written and it walked that fine line of explaining enough (so that someone unconnected to the fandom could understand) without cluttering up the narrative flow with clunky exposition. the characters were delightful and the ending was highly satisfying. All in all, it was a great read that I really enjoyed.

I hadn't even heard their music until long after I got into the fiction. I only bought albums because I was feeling guilty about all the free entertainment I'd had from their fictional counterparts. Now I do like it, but I think I'd like the fandom even if I loathed the music.

but it was a delightful piece of escapism from my usual fandoms.

My home fandom is Blakes 7, the original 'everyone dies' fandom. Popslash is indeed a lovely haven of sparkle for when the world gets depressing, as long as you steer clear of the angsty stuff.

That said, I'm now writing very dark post-Apocalyptic popslash. (The tagline is: 'Like The Stand meets Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, only with *NSYNC!'.) So I guess you can get the girl out of Blakes but you can't get Blakes out of the girl.

Basically, I'm blaming it on a friend.

Always a good plan. Personally, I blame torch and Calico, who sucked me in with their excellent fic.

All in all, it was a great read that I really enjoyed.

Thank you very much.
