Can I offically say the poll results are starting to freak me out? The split is roughly 80%/20%, in Dan's favour. So, for every one fan Casey has, Dan has four.

On the good side, if we ever track them down, there's far less fangirls I have to share Casey with. *g*

I'm going to have to leave this poll up a few days just to get a fairer result.

I'm not kidding. I keep looking at the results and thinking that can't be right. There have to be more Casey fans. You can't all love Danny, can you?

I also have this ridiculous urge to just go all cheerleader-ish and start chanting for Casey.

"Give me a C! C! Give me an A! A!..."

"Casey, Casey, he's our man! If he can't spell it, no-one can!" (Well, Dan or Jeremy could, since he asks them for spelling advice... *g*)

But, but, but... Damn. It's hard to argue with that kind of logic.

Still...

Casey! *goes back to jumping around with pompoms*

Why does this surprise you?

The less conventional member of the slash pairing *always* is more popular in slash fandom.

*thinks*

"Conventional" isn't quite the right word, but even though I've never seen the show and only read a bit of the fic I knew how your poll would come out. Danny has a yearning quality that is veritable slash catnip.

It surprises me because Casey's such a hottie! Okay, I'm sure I have more reasons than that. *thinks*

Re: Why does this surprise you?

I knew that Danny was popular, but really, I didn't think there was such a difference. Like, such an overwhelming difference. I mentioned to a friend that Casey was my fave, and she was surprised because "most people are into Danny". Hence, a bit of semi-scientific polling was called for.

Liking Casey is... a gradual process. For much of S1, he can be downright dislikeable. He's emotionally unobservant, he's wrapped up in his own lie, he's manipulative and punishing towards Dana. In S2, we see some of the sweeter aspects of Casey, still mixed in with the dislikeable ones. We see that he can be a good friend and highly supportive. We see that... being emotionally open doesn't come easy for him, that it isn't his natural state, that it takes effort, but he really tries to open up to the people he cares about. (We see him as a father, which is too adorable for words.)

Anyway, he's just... my fave.

Danny? Danny is far more charming, far more outgoing, far smoother and apparently more confident. Even when Danny screws up royally (and he does sometimes), he's so... earnest when he's trying to be forgiven. So, yes, I get the appeal. He's also the one who's most screwed up mentally/emotionally. He's a walking, flirting woobie.

The less conventional member of the slash pairing *always* is more popular in slash fandom.

I'm thinking about this. Because, yes, of the two guys, Casey is the more socially expected of the two. He's the early-thirties professional who does make his job a priority. He's the one who met his wife in college, dated her for five years, and then married her. He's the one who did the settling down with a wife and kids thing, even though it ended in divorce.

I wonder if part of it's the... escapism aspect of all fiction. That we tend to gravitate towards the characters that seem a little more removed from the everyday social expectations. We're not so fond of the guys who seem honestly brought up on the idea that a happy life must include a good job, a pretty wife and strapping kids. (The old white picket fence and 2.4 children mentality.) We'd rather focus on the ones that don't seem to buy into the old social stereotypes, that are traditionally somewhat restrictive of women.

I'm wondering about this. I mean, in SV, it's clearly in Lex's favour. If you look at Clark, he seems to be brought up on those old fashioned morals, and the underlying chauvanism inherent to them. Lex...? Lex has issues with women, and especially mother figures, but he seems to be a guy who's experimented more, who's seen more of life.

Maybe that's what it is. Broader horizons. The type of guy who's more fun to go out with, who knows how to have a good time. The type who shouldn't be too judgemental because he's been down too.

That would work with Danny, who had a history of drinking and drugs as a teen, who seems to be far smoother picking up women, who is highly supportive of the idea of having a social life that's just as important as work.

Let's see. By that theory, I'm guessing Ray K. would have to be the most popular in DS fandom (not in the fandom enough to know. I only saw S1 & S2, and Ray V was such a fave, although I'm awfully fond of Frasier too.).

I'd need more fandoms, and favourites, to be able to have a better idea of what I was talking about. Buffy fandom I'm familar with, but I've never been involved in it deeply enough to be certain of favourites (other than Spike, who would work for both theories).

Either that, or we're all suckers for a woobie. I could say something about the emotional neediness of it, or the appeal of a guy who's able to show his emotional vulnerability, but it comes down to the fact that if he makes you sniffle and go "awwww!", he's probably a crowd favourite.

:)

Mind you, while this wasn't a difficult choice for me to make, it should be noted that I still absolutely, positively, adore Casey McCall.

I'm sure you do. You just don't adore him as much as you adore Danny.

Yeah, I know that the Danny lovers don't have anything against Casey, just as I still think Dan is adorable and sweet and charming as anything. I was just curious that someone mentioned that there weren't a lot of Casey fans about... I'd always figured it was basically even, with a slight leaning towards Danny. This goes to show just how wrong I am.

Yeah. I don't know what the hell is wrong with those people. Casey is so much more my favorite (even if I don't see the slash).

*nods* Exactly!

Although, I was so amused that you beat me voting in my own poll. For a breif second, 100% of the votes belonged to Casey...

Danny has hang-dog eyes. He needs cuddling.

And, actually, I didn't really notice Peter Krause's hotness on Sports Night, because he so often did have uncool haircuts (combined with a perfect rectangle head). I don't think of myself as somone who cares about hair too much, but an unflattering 'do can work its way into my subconscious and make me conclude that the person's just not that attractive. (I often don't even see the attractiveness of prettyboy Tom Welling because the haircuts they give Clark Kent can be so amazingly dorky.)

Casey would definitely win in a "who's more heterosexual" poll, though.

He has hang-dog eyes, but I don't find that an incredibly appealing feature. *shrugs*

Plus, um... Casey has a great jawline, and he's just... highly lickable.

dorky haircuts? Kinda my weakness. I'm a sucker for those floppy hairstyles on guys. And I *like* the incredibly clean shaven/clean cut look of PK on SN. (I don't drool over him half as much on SFU, interestingly enough. It's the scruffy stubble, I think.)

Casey would definitely win in a "who's more heterosexual" poll, though.

*giggles* Yes, although I tend to think that Dan could win the "who's most deeply closeted" poll, but I think I'm definitely in the minority with that...

I started out crushing on Casey completely, but by the second season, Dan had won me over. Still love Casey, but I just adore Dan.

Heh. For me, it was the opposite. Started out by being utterly charmed by Dan, but Casey eventually became the favourite.
