So, since I showed
slashybits,
mcicioni and
vissy SN, I think I'm under a moral obligation to pimp the fandom to them.
Fannish Info
First of all, I'd check out
scrunchy's Dan/Casey essay on
ship_manifesto, It's Not Against the Law to Be Vaguely Gay. It's a lovely description of both guys and of slashy moments through the show (and is far more eloquent and logical than my wild, flailing attempts to answer questions).
I also have a rough Casey timeline if that helps. (I like knowing details.)
And there's a SN intro at
crack_van here that summarises the show and the characters.
The Fiction
When it comes to SN, I tend to get my fix via
inthetallgrass which is a fiction community that features stories from West Wing and Sports Night (both shows were written/created by Aaron Sorkin, which is why they're listed together).
The fandom used to have a main archive, but it's hosted by Trickster, and doesn't seem to be working these days. (It always seems to have troubles.) Hence, I tend to get my fix through recs and author sites.
Polyamorous Recs is a good rec page that has a lot of fandoms and it was my guide to SN when I first got into the show. (That's a link to their SN page of stories.)
... and typing this entry up would have been a lot quicker if I didn't stop to read To Casey On His Thirty-Fifth Birthday (which still makes me sniffle) and A Sandwich is a Transitory Thing (which is funny and delightful) ...
Anyway, recs. The other recs I'd point out would be
thefourthvine who does some interesting multi-fandom recs (but the tag function doesn't seem to be working, so I can't give you a direct link to her SN recs) and
makesmewannadie who recommends quite a few SN stories too (this should be the appropriate link).
There's also
crack_van for SN recs, made by a wide variety of fans, which, huh, proves that there are at least 102 SN fics worth reading. But I'd start with Polyamorous Recs as a better way to get a feel for the series.
Also, I know that
in_the_bottle was joking about how much I'd personally written, so I'm including a link to my stuff. A lot of it is short, pointless stories, but there's quite a few I'm proud of, too.
ETA: It just occured to me that we didn't watch the episode where Dan and Casey have to start the show in their shirts, jackets and boxers. I totally should have showed that.

Date: 2005-08-08 06:08 am (UTC)I tend to keep a memories section like that too (SN notes), because there's nothing like reading something that points out the big links for a fandom, and then losing it.

Date: 2005-08-08 10:12 am (UTC)... you know, I actually don't like Napoleon's Battle Plan that much. The whole no-trousers thing is one of those SN moments that's, to me, too silly and laboured to be amusing. Right up there with 'secular' and 'non-secular'. Good lord, I'm such a wee iconoclast.

As for Napoleon's Battle Plan, I like it. I like it from the extremely shallow perspective of seeing the boys in their boxers, and I like it because of the way that Dan and Casey interract, the way that Dan knows what's best, the way that Casey seems so relieved when someone else has made the hard decisions (re: telling Dana).

Date: 2005-08-09 07:43 am (UTC)I'd recommend joining the Yahoo SN slash mailing list (http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/slashsn) (it doesn't have heavy activity, so it won't clog up anyone's mailbox), and read through the fic in the old messages. That way you're not reliant on anyone else's personal prejudices. There's a lot of good stuff on there you won't find recced anywhere - all

Date: 2005-08-09 11:54 pm (UTC)As for recs, I think that it's a pure level of quantity for me, not so much quality. I've had about three or four fics recced, and I can promise you that's a fairly small percentage of total stories written.

Date: 2005-08-08 11:11 pm (UTC)If you're interested, there's this site (http://members.aol.com/Graecia13/trans.html) that has transcripts from some of the episodes (in case you want to read the snarky banter) and there's also summaries on TWOP.

Date: 2005-12-08 08:49 pm (UTC)In fairness, it's not ultimately a Trickster issue. There was a server crash at one point several years ago, and some hosted sites, like the SN archive, were never re-uploaded by their maintainers, for various reasons.
