Oh my god! That was fantastic! Absolutely fantastic!

Yes, my reactions are spoilery but they're not really in order. That's because the episode started in a cool but kind of slow way and it was the last ten minutes that really packed the punch.

OMG! Jack is the Face of Boe! That is so incredibly, wonderfully perfect! The Doctor now considers him impossible instead of wrong, which is true because the Face of Boe is virtually immortal, lived for millions of years, known by the Time Lords and clearly part of the universe's overall plan. Luckily, of course, Jack hasn't met the Face of Boe or I think his vain little self would be a touch horrified at how he'll look in a millenia or ten.

Next, there's Martha. Martha who once more proved that she rocks. Completely. Totally. The fact that she had the pure guts to travel around the world, to spend an entire year spreading a story, all on her own, is utterly awe-inspiring. I'm sad to see her go, but she went for good reasons -- the Doctor will never truly return her feelings, he just can't and after a year of not seeing her family but knowing what they've seen, I think she made the right choice.

As for Jack leaving, I was a little thrilled about that. Okay, I'm sorry the Doctor is once more left alone -- really sorry about that, but I'll ramble more when I talk about the Master -- but I like TW as a show. And if Jack had been abandoned again, it would have been terrible. I'd much rather that Jack spent time thinking about his team, about what they were doing and how they were, and decided to return to a place where he was truly, deeply *needed* instead of following a whim to see the Doctor. After all, he's had all the answers he's going to get from the Doctor and I think he's seen enough to realise that the Doctor really doesn't change.

As for the Master... oh man. John Simms is hot when he's maniacal and insane. Like, really, really hot. I'm still amazed that RTD brought the Master back for *three* episodes and then killed him off, but, oh, fantastic moments between him and the Doctor. I'd say it was slashy as all hell, but it was a hell of a lot more intense than that. Far out. If the internets don't implode from a sudden influx of fic featuring those two, I will be amazed. (And, y'all, if you read some good stuff featuring them? Leave me a link so I can enjoy as well.)

Lucy Saxon was far more fascinating than I expected. Like, I kept noticing her lack of enthusiasm/love for the Master as opposed to the last episode, and I guess it made sense when he explained that he'd shown he the end of time and the desolation and offered a solution -- although I think that as the year passed she must have seen that it wasn't a solution, it was just a different form of destruction. But was it her hand we saw at the end? I don't think it would be, I really don't.

ETA2: Upon rewatching, I'm going to say it was definitely supposed to be her fingernails. Okay, yes, after listening to the commentary I know it was that actress's hands, but I'm sure it's supposed to be that character's.

Also, RTD wins my love forever for the commentary. As they're talking about how the great tragedy of the episode is that the Master and Doctor are fighting, and they're two men who really should be great friends, and RTD adds in, "Or husbands, even." and everyone cracks up.

Yeah, Russell, we kind of noticed that the subtext had completely lost the "sub" in this episodes./ETA

But I also don't get how we could be given only *three* episodes of a fantastically insane and all-around-wonderful Master and then lose him forever. I'm sure RTD must have some sneaky up-his-sleeve plan regarding those red-tipped fingernails and the ring and oooh. Okay, I have no idea what it will be, but this is DW. This si the show that links Jack to the Face of Boe. I have every right to sit back in complete trust that when the plot twist comes, I'll love it.

As for the toglofane, I'd kind of picked that. Well, not that I'd specifically picked that, but I was certain that it would end up being either Time Lords or humans somehow converted into those little sphere things. For it to be something that would break the Doctor's hearts, it would need to be something that was originally a lifeform that the Doctor cared for. If it was just some mechanical invention of the Master's, it wouldn't actually hurt the Doctor at all.

And, right now, Mum's come home, so we're going to watch DW again. I expect to squee all over!

ETA1: And the Doctor sunk the Titantic. I'm incredibly amused at that idea, but not really surprised!

I kept noticing her lack of enthusiasm/love for the Master as opposed to the last episode

The implication there was domestic violence -he flirts with other women in front of her, she's got discreet bruising in a couple of scenes, etc.

In other news, I loved the parallel of both Jack and Martha staying behind because they had people to take care of. I was just like...*squishy love*

Big squishy love!

And personally, I think it also has something to do with seeing the Doctor beg the Master to stay/regenerate. I think they both realised that regardless of how enthusiastic the Doctor might be about travelling with them, regardless of how kindly he might ask them to stay, he'd never plead and fight for them the same way he would for the Master. I think they both realised, quite clearly, that their crushes were unrequited.

Also, your icon? Rocks.

Yeah, the second time I watched it, I spotted that too. And while I'm betting that a whole hoard of fangirls would dislike that turn, I kind of like it. I mean, the Master is charming and eccentric -- and has this little thing about killing off humanity -- but in the whole, he's strangely likeable. And I liked the fact that it was the Master's own actions over a year of power that turned Lucy against him. That he pushed and pulled and played power games just because he could, just because he enjoys it, and doesn't *care* how that effects those around him.

For all that the Doctor can occasionally be heartless towards his companions, at the base of it, he looks after them. He takes care of them. He tries to help them. The Master treats people like toys, like playthings, and the difference shows.

You know, I was placing a bet with myself over how long your post about the ep was gonna be, and yep, I won! It's rather long. :D

Re: Titanic, didn't Nine commented the fact that he was on the Titanic?

Technically, this was a short reactionary post. *laughs* I've found that I write more if I open up Notepad straight away and get down the reactions while I'm waiting for LJ to load. Weird, but true.

Re: Titanic, didn't Nine commented the fact that he was on the Titanic?

Somebody said that Nine was on there, so... hmmm. Could we have a Doctor/Doctor episode? 'Cause that'd be nice.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but I think that spoiler would've been so huge that I wouldn't have been able to avoid it if it was true or if there was any rumour of it being true...

Jack as the Face of Boe made me ridiculously happy, because it means he becomes legendary and heroic and stuff, and dies with the Doctor right beside him! *sniffles* I am officially a big sap (and Jack fangirl). Also, I want to be Martha when I grow up. That is all.

As for fic, [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle has just committed some eeeeexcellent Doctor/Master here (http://mmmchelle.livejournal.com/241107.html#cutid1), and I know there's also a lot of Master/Lucy - [livejournal.com profile] taraljc links to some on her journal, and it's awesomely twisted.

Ooooh! Thank you for the recs!

*nods* And he died saving an entire (under)city of people. How much more awesomely heroic can you be?

Meanwhile, I was amused to note that Martha and the Doctor discuss that the Face of Boe said "You are not alone" *in front* of Jack. So I'm wondering if he mentioned that whole nickname on purpose...

Also, I want to be Martha when I grow up. That is all.

Amen. Martha is the most awesomely awesome thing ever.

I love Jack the Face of Boe too. :)

And I dunno how much this is part of it, but at least one reason we aren't getting any more Simm is that he doesn't like it: Simm was doing it only cause his kid loves the show, and really doesn't like the whole Who thing, apparently. Woes.

Ooooh. That's probably a big part of it, actually. I'd heard that Simm's son really liked DW, but I hadn't heard that he wasn't too into it. That's cool, though. He did a fantastic job in those three eps and I loved them, so I love him for doing it.

After all, not every actor can be an old-school DW fan (but I do love that both JB and DT are!).

Personally I wasn't all that impressed with the finale, though there was a lot that was good about it. It lost me at the whole 'clap if you believe in fairies' towards the end.

But Jack as the Face of Boe....the entire nation fell off the sofa at that point, I'm telling you!

Hee! For good reason. It's hilarious.

Fair enough. It's really one of those YMMV type of things. For me, personally, I love that while the biggest monster in the episode was the darker side of humanity (and the darker side of... TimeLordity? *shrugs*), the biggest weapon against it was the faith and collective power of humanity.

But, yeah, YMMV.

I had a lot of wow moments, but that was the one that totally got to me - I had tears rolling down my face, just thinking of him, in the future, (five billion years, wasn't it?) meeting the Doctor and Martha again as he's dying.

And yes, the Doctor loves impossible things - I was so happy when he called Jack impossible, rather than wrong. *sniffs*

Awww! You old softie! Personally, I cracked up at the thought of current-Jack being a little vain, and how possibly horrified he'd be if he realised what five million/billion years can do to a poster boy.

And yes, the Doctor loves impossible things - I was so happy when he called Jack impossible, rather than wrong. *sniffs*

Okay, yes, that warmed the cockles of my heart. I mean, Jack's smile and the whole "I've been called that before" and awwww! Ten showing that sense of approval and Jack being so charmed by it and me just melting in the love.
