Dude! Paige is singing Fever. Slow, sexy and sultry. Man, that's the way that song should be sung! *bg*

Hey! They cut it down to shreds! That song rocks, and they turned it into about ten lines long. *pouts*

Hmmm... Hey, is anyone on my Friends list keeping up with the Historical Clex challenge? Has there been an entry for 15-17th century Ottoman Empire Clex? I'm just curious because of the Harem documentary that was on this week and last week. I don't know just how I could fit Clark and Lex into the Sultan's palace/harem, but I'd like to see it done. Or, possibly, if I get time, maybe even work on a fic along those lines... Hmmm... Bad fic-bunny-spawning documentary! *g*

Heh. I treated (!) the kids to my rendition of Fever as I put them into bed tonight *eg*. I think they preferred Paige, somehow...

It didn't help that J is hip deep in OoTP atm, and I was interrupting her reading!!! Evil mum.

I watched most of the Harem doco last night, but turned it off when I started to fall asleep. I reckon you could do a pretty mean Clex au for it *g*.

Heh. Interrupting a girl's reading? You are nasty! *g*

Oh, btw, I wanted to thank you for bringing Antonious (sp?) to my attention. Meant that I actually recognised the reference when it popped up in Tipping the Velvet last week. *g*

I know! It's the luxury, the wealth and indulgence, the political struggles. So much power, and intrigue, all behind the scenes, and it appears so very dedadent. I'm very interested by it at the moment.

But the trouble is working out where eveyone would fit in. I mean, Lex is obviously the Sultan's oldest son, possibly by an old favourite of the Sultan.

But how to work Clark into it? My first thought was as a Eunuch, but that has problems. Mainly, I don't want to castrate Clark and it could be impossible anyway. And, even though the job could be botched, they only used African slaves, so it wouldn't work (would work for Pete - don't particularly want to see him castrated either, but it'd be the only way he could be worked into the story.).

I thought, that one of the midwifes could be bribed into lying and saying that Clark was the son of one of the girls, but that wouldn't work either. There would be too many women around to see her give birth or to fake a pregnancy (maybe if she had a child that died young, and then found Clark...) Plus, the harem woment were constantly inside. They wouldn't have been able to find a child that crashed during a meteor storm.

Hmmm...

Write! Write!

Ah, Clark could be a prize from a raid on another kingdom, perhaps *g*.

Either he was treasured by his adopted homeland and therefore prized as booty, making him an elite class of slave, or he was a commoner and caught up with the roundup of young men from that area, and simply catches the Prince's eye...

I imagine the prince being besotted by this young man's ability to blush prettier than any of the females in his harem, favouring him and raising his staus, causing jealousy and dissent...

Then! Then an attempt is made on the young prince's life, and his favoured saves him from assassination (as he does *g*). Perhaps he is then raised again to personal guard status, never leaving the prince's side...

Hmm. Not that I've thought about this at all. ;-)

Or, perhaps even not personal guard status. There was one slave who was raised to High Vizier. He had started out as a simple guard, and ended up being the Sultan's most trusted confident, even sleeping in the same room as him (there were rumours that they were lovers, but no proof one way or the other). In the end, the Sultan believed his wife's comments, and had the guy executed, but he did it in the royal way, so there was some lasting respect there. Hmmm...

Let's see, that was the first Sultan (last week) with... the first Saltana, actually. Damnit, can't remember her name, or I'd do a quick google search.

See, it's a good plan, you should write! *g*

...

I also have an idea, but it's too long to post in one entry.

Alternative story part 1:

Of course, the other option could be to have the Sultan adopt Clark. Possibly, be travelling, or hunting... or even fightig a war, when teh meteors come down and smite his enemies. And, taking it as a sign from God, he adopts Clark and Clark quickly becomes his favourite. Probably given to one of his favourite women in the harem.

Lex, meanwhile is the son of an old favourite of the Sultan's. Possibly a woman that no longer pleases the Sultan as much, but who has been in the harem a long time, and who knows the political system. Lex would be the oldest, the one most likely to rule, until Clark becomes the Sultan's favourite son.

Hmmm... You could have interesting growing up years, where they both struggle for approval, both guided by their mothers, in the best way to stay alive. Possibly, you could have this constant competition, low grade macho striving, that eventually becomes fond.

Clark could intercept an assasination attempt on Lex's life, by one of the other royal princes in the palace, earning Lex's thanks. Lex could fall in love with him, even knowing that one day, when his father dies, he will have to kill Clark. Possibly, we could have a good deal of UST as Lex tries not too become too fond of him. Or, perhaps they become lovers, regardless of how much Lex tries to keep himself distanced.

As an elder prince, Lex would eventually leave the palace, and become a leader in the army, gaining the public's approval. Probably trying to poison the public against Clark, because he knows that Clark will be his main rival. The other princes, Lex has no concerns about. He can fight them, he can kill them, and he can do with the public's support. In fact, he's probably already started to send assassins after his younger brothers as he realises that the Sultan is growing ill, and won't live much longer.

When the Sultan dies, Lex's mother hides the body and sends messengers for him to return at once. Following his mother's orders, because we all know that mother has his best interests at heart, he returns at once. When he returns, he kills his brothers, except Clark, before announcing the death of the Sultan and claiming the crown.

Sometime during their childhood, or perhaps during a brief time as lovers, Lex has discovered Clark's one weakness - Kryptonite. Using it, he weakens Clark, and imprisons him with the rocks, keeping Clark too weak to escape. But Lex finds that regardless of his mother's cajoling, he can't bring himself to order Clark's death. He knows that he needs to do this to secure his position, that there is still a faction that supports Clark, and plans for a rebellion to free him and place him on the throne. but still, he can't force himself to do it.

He starts putting the country in order, and finds himself visiting Clark, reminded of his days as a young prince, remembering how fond he is of Clark. Lex's mother warns him that Clark is a political liability, and Lex ignores it, not knowing that behind the scenes, Clark's adopted mother is organising a rebellion, using the greif and frustration of the other mothers in the harem to provide her with a strong base of power.

Eventually, one night as Lex is visiting Clark's rooms, the rebellion attacks. Gaining entrance to the harem through the women and the eunuchs that they have convinced, they go to Clark's room, intent on freeing him. Hearing the noise, Lex attempts to bar the door, fearing for both of their lives. Looking around the room, he realises that there is no other escape from this room, and they are both trapped.

Agh. I haven't started reading any in the Historical Challenge, yet. Not enough time.

Are they all up on one site? Or is it a matter of scroilling through SSA?

I don't know! I've been following LJ links from Friends. Hence, I've read three. But they were really good.

There's cavemen Clex (http://www.livejournal.com/users/bexless/96508.html), which made me crack up. *wipes brow* You have no idea how hard that link was to find.

There's Ancient Egypt Clex (http://www.livejournal.com/users/rosenho/123002.html?mode=reply), which I'm currently, kinda reading. Well, I've been reading on and off for the last three hours. I don't quite have the concentration level tonight.

And there's Wild West Clex (http://shfc.kleinerplatz.com/stories/wendi_lastoutpost.html), which was really good. Damn, I loved that. And, check this out, this link leads to the Historical fiction archive. Heh. I didn't even know it existed.

(Feels intense guilt, as I had already read the Cavemen Clex offering *g*, thereby negating your heroic effort to trace the link *cringe*) I appreciate your adding it, though! A lot! :-) :-)

The rest will be noted and used, though :-D. Much thanks.

don't feel guilty

Aah, good luck on your foraging.

hey, for the WW fic, should I just upload it to the Boozefest mailing list/file uploading thingy, or is it best to email it to you directly? Considering I only need to change one minor detail (Heh. USA has 50 states, not 52. Who knew?), it's been ready to go for a while.

The fic is just a little rift from a line in S1, regarding selling off entire states. In the fic, I joked about them selling off a state, and having only 51 left. *g*

Someone pointed out that there were only 50 states, so I either didn't know my geography, or couldn't count. Hee!

Just a silly thing that I'd been sure of from TV, so I checked it out with a few other US'ers and got the same reply. There's only 50 states.

As the sound of the crowd outside grows stronger, and battering at the door, Lex grabs the small stones of Kryptonite hidden around the room and flings them out the barred windows.

Suddenly, as the door is broken down, the small crowd of men rush in, and Lex sees that they are palace guards, obviously those loyal to Clark and his mother. Although the reason for the raid was to rescue Clark, seeing Lex they realise that they have the perfect opportunity. If they kill Lex, there will be no other claims to the throne.

Advancing on Lex, some of the men lunge for him, trying to strangle him without shedding royal blood, which in and of itself is a great crime. Lex attempts to fight them off, but is overcome. Clark, having regained his strength, once again saves Lex's life, forcefully rescuing his and refusing to be Sultan. His supporters don't believe him, and Clark is forced to reveal the truth of his birth, that he does not actually have any royal blood in his veins, and therefore cannot be Sultan. Until then, the population had not known that Clark was adopted, as the harem was secret from all but those in power, and none could speak of it. Hence, when the sultan adopted Clark, everyone was forced to say that Clark was the Sultan's son.

This stalls the crowd enough for palace guard loyal to Lex, to storm in and defeat the rebels, giving them a traitor's death. Lex is taken to see his doctors, and told that his mother was killed in the uprising. In the confusion, Clark is left in an unlocked room, unguarded.

Later, after doctors have seen to Lex, Lex returns to Clark's rooms, and finds that Clark is still there. When he asks why Clark didn't escape...
"Why didn't you escape? Why didn't you run?"
"I had nowhere to run to."
"You could have become the next Sultan."
"I told the truth Lex. I have no royal blood, no true claim to the throne."
"It wouldn't have mattered. They would have supported you anyway." Clark shakes his head, but Lex continues, "You could have told them you were sent by God himself, to lead the Empire to glory, just as your arrival brought glory to us. They would have followed you."
Lex sits on the couch, head in his hands, trying to work out what to do now.
"It didn't matter."
Lex chokes out a short laugh, "Of course it matters. It's what we're raised for, to rule, to succeed."
"No." Clark sits beside Lex.
"It's not something you can refuse." Lex looks at Clark disbelievingly.
"I don't want to rule, Lex. I never did."
Lex looks away from Clark, thinking. "And what about our childhood. The competitions, the striving to be the best."
"I never did it to beat you. I did it to be..." Clark trails off, uncertain.
"To what?" Lex asks softly.
"To be near you, to be close to you." clark leans over and kisses Lex gently, but Lex clings, turning the kiss into something hungry, ravenous, before gaining control of himself and pulling away.
"It doesn't change anything."
"It has to. It has to mean something Lex."
"The longer you're alive, the weaker I become. it's the way of the Empire, Clark. The rules by which we reign."
"You never were one to play by the rules." Clark says, with a fond smile.
Lex looks at Clark, surprised, then smirks at him. "No, I didn't, but I still won."

Eventually, they come to the compromise. Lex will announce that there has been too much royal blood spilt, and will make it a crime for royalty to be executed. He will announce that from now on Princes, like their mothers, will live in the Palace, in the Harem, where they can live in luxury like a royal should. It will be understood that what he means is that they will be slaves, imprisoned in a gilded cage.

The politically harsh decision means that Clark will live in the Harem, and to the outside world he will appear stranded, out of touch with politics, subject to Lex changing his mind and his decree. In reality, Clark will be Lex's support, his co-conspirator, his confidant. Clark will use the knowledge gathered by his mother in the harem to help guide Lex, encouraging him to be a good, smart and caring ruler. People will wonder how Lex can make such informed and wise decisions without his mother to guide him. Together and united, Clark and Lex will lead the Ottoman Empire to glory.

I've got Slod's Perry White challenge to do, and WW fic to finish, and...

Yeah, I've got the outline, I just don't want to start tonight. Maybe, what I should do is make a start of Saturday, have a look at a few sites for historical knowledge...

Hmmm... okay, if someone else hasn't already started, I'll try to turn it into a fic.

Hey, thinking of that, I never got around to sending you the boozey WW fic, did I? I should do that tonight.

Hee! I'm out Sunday arvo (QC 101 - basic, getting to know you lunch session for the Victorian QC'ers. Hence, I'll be in the city 12-5pm, so unlikely I'll actually accomplish anything *g*)...

But, I think the nagging could be appreciated. It's a good plan, but it would be long, and every time I start a long fic I... the interest dies away, and it doesn't get finished. (Note the length of time spent on the SV boozefest fic. *cringes apologetically*)

Yeah, I'll do it on the weekend.
