WW fic: The Right Word
Aug. 10th, 2003 10:47 pmYou know, my knowledge of HTML is so pathetic that I tend to be proud of getting a very basic page working (even if I did use MSFrontPage to get it). Considering I passed computing systems (with C+ coding), I know it's just a case of effort. I'm just too lazy to work out how to do it.
Here is The Right Word which was vastly improved by both
kaneko and
oxoniensis. Thanks for pointing out things like internal logic, flow, and the phrases that Sam would have verbally bitch-slapped me for using.
ETA: You see the pretty pic at the top? That was my birthday present from
oxoniensis! *bg*

Date: 2003-08-10 06:52 am (UTC)I really liked this. Unlike some of the J/S around, this sounded and "looked" like them.
And I love Sam thinking about words and finding the right word. I particularly nodded at:
He remembered his certainty that the right word, the perfect word, was there, resting amongst the others. The right word would make the difference between an adequate sentence and an inspiring phrase, between mediocre writing and great prose.
And yes, Sam...sometimes it's impossible to find the right word.
Very nice and wordy.

But if he didn't keep looking for it, he wouldn't be Sam. *g*

Date: 2003-08-10 03:49 pm (UTC)One of the things that really amused me was the bad grammar/dodgy phrases that my beta's picked up on. (Let's just say that I was one step off "highly unique"... *g*)
Personaly, I'm a little intimidated of writing Sam for this reason. He's a better writer than I am, and I hate the idea of writing a fic that's filled with mistakes that Sam wouldn't make. (Toby, I wouldn't even attempt. At least Sam has similar flaws to me, too much imagery and description, too little punctuation and grammatically correct sentences... *g*)

Date: 2003-08-10 11:59 pm (UTC)Oh good! It may just be my browser then. But as it's dodgy on your work PC too, I think I'd still better try to sharpen it up. It might not be until the weekend though - I've a busy week ahead.

Date: 2003-08-18 10:50 am (UTC)Anyway, there's not a lot of J/S that still hits my buttons, but The Right Word did it for me. It was so very Sam - and even Josh sold me. Good job! :)

Woohoo! *does the happy writer dance of positive feedback*
I'm glad they both worked for you. I'm such a Sam gal and I was more than a little intimidated by trying to work from inside his head, so it's great that it did work.
